Overview

EN 869:2006/prA1 is a European Standard focusing on the safety requirements for pressure metal diecasting units in foundry machinery. Developed by the Technical Committee CEN/TC 202, this updated amendment enhances and modifies the original EN 869:2006 to align with newer safety directives and standards. It supports the essential requirements of the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and complements the existing Directive 98/37/EC.

This standard underscores the importance of risk mitigation for operators of pressure metal diecasting machines by defining safety functions, control system performance levels, and hazard prevention strategies. Overall, it facilitates safer operational environments in foundries and diecasting operations.

Key Topics

  • Updated Safety Normative References
EN 869:2006/prA1 incorporates revisions to normative references such as replacing EN 954-1 with EN ISO 13849-1:2008 and EN 418 with EN ISO 13850:2006. These updates align safety of machinery control systems and emergency stop functions with the latest international standards.

  • Mechanical Safety Requirements
The standard mandates that fixed guards must remain attached when removed and that guards covering the die-closing mechanism must be interlocked with power supply and control systems. Specific performance levels (e.g., PL=c, PL=d, PL=e) and safety categories are required for different safety functions, ensuring robust protection against mechanical hazards.

  • Electrical Equipment and Control Systems
Safety-related parts of control systems must comply with defined performance levels and categories according to EN ISO 13849-1. Emergency stop functions must conform to stop categories defined in EN ISO 13850. Control systems related to dangerous movements, such as die closure, require high-performance levels for maximum safety.

  • Thermal Hazard Management
The document addresses thermal hazards caused by hot surfaces and molten metal during diecasting operations, emphasizing protective measures and ergonomic considerations to minimize operator risk.

  • Ergonomic Considerations
It requires ergonomic principles to be incorporated in the design of diecasting machines, focusing on manual controls, setup, and maintenance activities to promote safe and comfortable working postures.

  • Information for Use and Marking
Manufacturers must provide clear information including warning devices, safety signs (referencing EN 61310-1, EN 61310-2, ISO 3864-1), and machine marking detailing important data such as manufacturer info, machine type, year of construction, and electrical specifications.

Applications

EN 869:2006/prA1 is essential for:

  • Manufacturers designing and producing pressure metal diecasting machinery to ensure compliance with mandatory safety requirements and EU directives.
  • Foundries and metal casting facilities implementing safety protocols and machinery upgrades to meet modern safety standards and reduce workplace hazards.
  • Maintenance and safety engineers developing and reviewing risk assessments, safety control systems, and guarding solutions tailored to pressure diecasting machines.
  • Certification bodies and regulatory agencies overseeing conformity assessments and CE marking processes for machinery in the European Economic Area (EEA).

By adhering to this standard, stakeholders can enhance operational safety, prevent work-related injuries from mechanical, thermal, and electrical hazards, and maintain compliance with EU machinery safety legislation.

Related Standards

EN 869:2006/prA1 references and integrates updates from several pivotal international standards, including:

  • EN ISO 13849-1:2008 – Safety-related parts of control systems
  • EN ISO 13850:2006 – Emergency stop design principles
  • EN ISO 13857:2008 – Safety distances for hazard prevention
  • EN ISO 13732-1:2006 – Assessment of thermal impacts from hot surfaces
  • EN 60204-1:2006 – Electrical equipment of machines – General requirements
  • EN 61310 Series – Safety signs and signals for machinery
  • ISO 3864-1 – Safety colors and graphical symbols for workplaces
  • EN 842, EN 981, EN ISO 7731 – Auditory and visual danger signals

Implementation of EN 869:2006/prA1 not only ensures enhanced safety performance but also harmonizes machinery safety requirements across the European Union, reinforcing consistent, high-level safety practices within the metal casting industry.
