This part of EN 14598 specifies the methods of preparation of test specimens and the test methods to be used in
determining the properties of Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC) and Bulk Moulding Compound (BMC).
Requirements for handling test material and for conditioning both of the test material before moulding and of the
specimens before testing are found here.
Procedures and conditions for the preparation of test specimens and procedures for measuring properties of the
materials from which these specimens are made are given. Properties and test methods which are suitable and
necessary to characterize SMCs and BMCs are listed.
The properties have been selected from the general test methods in EN ISO 10350-2, Plastics - Acquisition and
presentation of comparable single-point data - Part 2 Long-fibre-reinforced plastics. Other test methods in wide
use for or of particular significance to these compression and injection moulding materials are also included in this
part of EN 14598, as are the designatory properties found in Part 1: Designation.
In order to obtain reproducible and comparable test results, it is necessary to use the methods of preparation and
conditioning, test-specimens with the dimensions and the test procedures specified herein. Values determined will
not necessarily be identical to those obtained using test-specimens of different dimensions or prepared using
different procedures.

In diesem Teil von EN 14598 werden die Verfahren zur Herstellung von Probekörpern und die Prüfverfahren
festgelegt, die zur Bestimmung der Eigenschaften von Harzmatten (SMC) und faserverstärkten Pressmassen
(BMC) anzuwenden sind. Er enthält Anforderungen an die Handhabung der zu prüfenden Formmassen und
das Konditionieren der zu prüfenden Formmassen vor der Formgebung und der Probekörper vor der Prüfung.
Angegeben werden Verfahren und Bedingungen zur Herstellung von Probekörpern und Verfahren zur
Bestimmung der Eigenschaften der Formmassen, aus denen diese Probekörper hergestellt werden.
Aufgeführt sind Eigenschaften und Prüfverfahren, die zur Charakterisierung von SMC und BMC geeignet und
notwendig sind.
Die Eigenschaften wurden aus den allgemeinen Prüfverfahren in ISO 10350-2, Plastics : Acquisition and
presentation of comparable single-point data . Part 2: Long-fibre-reinforced plastics, ausgewählt. Außerdem
sind in diesem Teil von EN 14598 weitere Prüfverfahren enthalten, die vielfach angewendet werden oder für
diese Formpress- und Spritzgießmassen von besonderer Bedeutung sind, während die kennzeichnenden
Eigenschaften in Teil 1 :Bezeichnungis zu finden sind.
Damit reproduzierbare und vergleichbare Prüfergebnisse erhalten werden, ist es notwendig, die Herstellungs-
und Konditionierverfahren, Probekörper mit den Maßen und Prüfverfahren anzuwenden, die in der vorliegen-
den Norm festgelegt sind. Die ermittelten Werte werden nicht notwendigerweise mit den Werten übereinstim-
men, die an Probekörpern mit davon abweichenden Maßen oder mit davon abweichenden Verfahren zur
Probekörperherstellung erhalten wurden.

La présente partie de l�EN 14598 spécifie les méthodes de préparation des éprouvettes ainsi que les
méthodes d�essai à utiliser pour la détermination des propriétés des mats préimprégnés (SMC) et des
mélanges à mouler en masse (BMC). Les exigences concernant la manipulation du matériau d�essai, ainsi
que le conditionnement du matériau d�essai avant moulage et des éprouvettes avant essai, sont décrites
ci-après.
Elle donne les modes opératoires et les conditions à respecter pour la préparation des éprouvettes ainsi que
les modes opératoires relatifs au mesurage des propriétés des matériaux dont ces éprouvettes sont
constituées. La norme contient une liste des propriétés et des méthodes d�essai appropriées indispensables
pour caractériser les SMC et BMC.
Les propriétés sont choisies dans les méthodes d�essai générales indiquées dans l�EN ISO 10350-2,
"Plastiques - Acquisition et présentation de caractéristiques intrinsèques comparables - Partie 2 : Plastiques
renforcés par de longues fibres". D�autres méthodes d�essai largement utilisées ou d�importance particulière
pour ces matériaux de moulage par compression ou par injection sont également données dans la présente
partie de l�EN 14598, et le mode de désignation des propriétés figure dans la Partie 1 : Désignation.
Afin d�obtenir des résultats d�essai reproductibles et comparables, il est nécessaire d�utiliser les méthodes de
préparation et de conditionnement des éprouvettes, ainsi que les dimensions et les méthodes d�essai
spécifiées dans la norme. Les valeurs déterminées ne seront pas nécessairement identiques à celles
obtenues avec des éprouvettes de dimensions différentes ou préparées selon d�autres modes opératoires.

This document (EN 14598-2:2005) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 249 “Plastics”, the
secretariat of which is held by IBN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an identical text or
by endorsement, at the latest by October 2005, and conflicting national standards shall be withdrawn at the latest
by October 2005.

1 Scope
This part of EN 14598 specifies the methods of preparation of test specimens and the test methods to be used in
determining the properties of Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC) and Bulk Moulding Compound (BMC).

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.

4 Preparation of test specimens
4.1 General
It is essential that specimens are always prepared by the same procedure (either injection moulding or
compression moulding), using the same processing conditions.
The procedure to be used for each test method is indicated in Table 3 (M = injection moulding, Q = compression
moulding).
The material shall be kept in styrene-proof packaging until it is required for use.
4.2 Pre-treatment of the material
Before processing by injection moulding no pre-treatment of the material sample is normally necessary. If a pre-
treatment is required this shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Before processing by compression moulding pre-treatment of the material sample in accordance with ISO 1268 is
allowed.
4.3 Injection moulding
Injection moulded specimens shall be prepared in accordance with ISO 1268-10 and/or ISO 1268-11, using the
conditions specified in Table 1.
