EN 17333-3:2020 - Characterisation of One Component Foam (Part 3: Application)
Overview
EN 17333-3:2020 is a CEN European standard that defines test methods to evaluate the application properties of one component foams (OCFs) dispensed from single pressurized foam containers. It covers moisture-curing, self‑curing activatable and water‑drying foams supplied in aerosol cans or gun cans. The standard describes how to determine practical performance attributes that affect on‑site use and quality control.
Keywords: EN 17333-3:2020, one component foam, OCF, cutting time, tack free time, sagging, test methods, moisture curing, pressurized foam containers
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and definitions: terms such as one component foam (OCF), pressurised foam container, cutting time, tack free time, and sagging are defined consistently with EN 923 and related norms.
- Test environment and sampling:
- Conditioning of test containers at test temperature for at least 24 h.
- Typical test conditions specified: (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % RH (other conditions may be reported).
- Preparation steps (e.g., shake container, discard first dose) are required for repeatable results.
- Three standardized application tests:
- Method 1 - Cutting time: Dispense beads on a horizontal surface and determine time until a knife cuts without sticking or deforming the bead; result reported to nearest full 5 minutes.
- Method 2 - Tack free time: Touch the bead surface periodically with a clean rod/adapter tube until no adhesion is detected; result in minutes to nearest full minute.
- Method 3 - Sagging: Spray foam into vertical joints of increasing width to evaluate slip/flow and establish maximum usable joint width at given canister and ambient temperatures.
- Reporting: test reports must include reference to the standard, laboratory and sample identification, test conditions, any deviations, and observations.
Practical applications and users
- Manufacturers and R&D teams: optimise formulations, nozzle adapters, and dispensing systems based on cutting time, tack free time and sagging behavior.
- Quality control laboratories: verify batch conformity and stability claims under standardized conditions.
- Product specifiers, procurement and certification bodies: compare OCF products using consistent, repeatable metrics for performance and usability.
- Construction and insulation contractors: understand product suitability for vertical joints, cure timing and handling windows to plan installations.
Related standards
- EN 17333 series: Part 1 (Foam yield characteristics), Part 2 (Expansion characteristics), Part 4 (Mechanical strength), Part 5 (Insulation).
- Normative references cited: EN 923 (terms and definitions), EN 14847 and EN 15006 (pressurised container dimensions).
Note: EN 17333-3:2020 does not address all safety concerns. Users must establish appropriate health, safety and regulatory compliance before use.

Article EN 17333-3:2020 discusses the characterization of one-component foam. Specifically, it focuses on the application properties of moisture curing, self-curing activatable, or water drying foams that are dispensed from single pressurized foam containers. The document provides test methods for evaluating these application properties. It is important for users to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine regulatory requirements before using the methods described. The three test methods outlined in the article are: 1. Cutting time: This method determines the hardening time of a dispensed foam until it can be cut. 2. Tack free time: This method determines the time it takes for a freshly foamed foam to become tack-free. 3. Sagging: This method evaluates the behavior of the foam and determines the largest joint possible before the dispensed foam slips off.
