Overview - EN 846-14:2012 (CEN)

EN 846-14:2012 is a CEN test-method standard for determining the initial in‑plane shear strength of the horizontal bed joint between the prefabricated part of a composite lintel and the masonry above it. The standard describes specimen preparation, conditioning, test apparatus, loading procedures, calculation methods and test report content. The method aligns with EN 1052-3:2003+A1:2006, with specific guidance where it deviates.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and principle
    • Measures initial shear strength of the bed joint using small specimens tested in shear under four‑point loading.
    • Defines valid failure modes and two test procedures:
      • Procedure A - tests at different precompressions and derives shear strength by linear regression to zero prestress.
      • Procedure B - tests at zero precompression; characteristic values obtained by simple or statistical methods.
  • Specimen types and dimensions
    • Type I and Type II specimen geometries are specified depending on unit height and length (e.g., pieces of prefabricated lintel paired with a masonry unit).
    • Typical bed joint thickness guidance: 8–15 mm for conventional mortar joints or 1–3 mm for thin‑layer mortar.
  • Materials and conditioning
    • Requirements for masonry units, mortar (reference EN 998‑2) and conditioning procedures; moisture and compressive strength tests referenced (EN 772 series).
  • Testing apparatus and accuracy
    • Testing machine requirements include adequate capacity and controlled loading rate; recommended accuracy: repeatability ~2%, mean error ±2%, zero‑force error ~0.4% of range.
    • Measurement of specimen cross‑section to 1% accuracy.
  • Calculations, evaluation and reporting
    • Methods for computing individual and characteristic shear strength values, statistical treatment, and required contents for the test report.

Applications - who uses EN 846-14

  • Manufacturers of composite lintels - product development and quality control.
  • Construction product test laboratories - type testing and certification.
  • Structural and masonry engineers - verifying interface performance between lintel components and masonry.
  • Certification bodies and regulators - demonstrating compliance with European harmonized test methods.
  • Contractors and QA teams - on-site verification planning and acceptance testing specifications.

3 Principle
The initial shear strength of the horizontal bed joint between the prefabricated part of a composite lintel
and the masonry above it is derived from the strength of small specimens tested to destruction. The
specimens are tested in shear under four-point load.
Four different failure modes are considered to give valid results.
Two procedures, A and B are included. Procedure A involves testing specimens at different
precompressions and the initial shear strength is defined by a linear regression curve to zero
prestress. Procedure B involves testing specimens at zero precompression and determining a
characteristic initial shear strength from a simple or a statistical consideration of the results.
