Thermal insulating products for building applications - Determination of squareness

This European Standard specifies the equipment and procedure for determining the deviation from squareness for length, width and/or thickness of full-size products. It is applicable to thermal insulating products. The method is normally applicable to products with straight edges. For products of other shape, e.g. profiled edges, the method can be adapted accordingly.

Overview

EN 824:2013 is a European Standard developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), specifying the method for determining the deviation from squareness of thermal insulating products used in building applications. This standard outlines the equipment, test specimen requirements, and procedures needed to accurately measure deviations in length, width, and thickness squareness for full-size insulation products-primarily those with straight edges, but adaptable for profiled edges as well.

The standard supports consistent quality control and compliance within the thermal insulation industry, ensuring product dimensions meet strict tolerances for squareness, an essential parameter affecting installation and performance in building envelopes.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
EN 824:2013 applies exclusively to thermal insulating products designed for buildings. Its scope covers measuring the deviation from a perfect right angle (90°) in the product edges, essential for proper fitting and installation.

  • Test Equipment
The standard requires a flat surface, a precise metal square with limbs at least 500 mm in length and a squareness deviation of less than ±0.1 mm, and a metal ruler or tape graduated in millimeters (with 0.5 mm readability).

  • Test Specimens
Full-size products are tested, with the number of specimens specified by the product standard or agreed upon between parties. Conditioning of samples at specified temperature and humidity conditions ensures consistency and replicability.

  • Measurement Procedure
Squareness deviation is measured by placing the metal square against product edges and measuring the gap between the product edge and the square’s limb at specified points. The process includes:

    • Measuring length and width edges at corners with angles less than or equal to 90°.
    • Measuring thickness edges by placing the square on a flat surface against the test specimen edge, and recording the maximum deviation.
    • Accounting for any deviation from linearity of edges and reporting it separately.
  • Calculation of Results
Deviation is expressed in millimeters per meter for length and width using a precise formula and in millimeters for thickness. Results are rounded to the nearest millimeter per meter or millimeter as appropriate.

  • Test Reporting
Reports must include identification details such as product name and manufacturer, test conditions and procedure, and detailed results including all individual measurements and maximum deviations from squareness and linearity.

Applications

EN 824:2013 is critical for manufacturers, quality assurance laboratories, and regulatory bodies involved in the production and certification of thermal insulating materials for building construction. Practical applications include:

  • Quality Control
Manufacturers use this standard to ensure products meet specified dimensional tolerances, enabling reliable thermal performance and proper fit during installation.

  • Compliance and Certification
Testing according to EN 824:2013 supports compliance with European construction product directives and enhances product credibility for market acceptance.

  • Product Development
The standard aids in design verification, helping manufacturers optimize product dimensions and improve edge squareness to enhance usability and installation efficiency.

  • Inspection and Verification
Third-party testing laboratories and certification bodies apply this method to verify product claims and ensure conformity before products reach the construction site.

Related Standards

EN 824:2013 is part of a comprehensive series of standards from CEN/TC 88 addressing physical and mechanical properties of thermal insulating materials. Key related standards include:

  • EN 822 – Determination of Length and Width of Thermal Insulating Products
  • EN 823 – Determination of Thickness
  • EN 825 – Determination of Flatness
  • EN 826 – Determination of Compression Behaviour
  • EN 1602 to EN 1609 – Various tests involving density, dimensional stability, tensile strength, and water absorption
  • EN 12085 to EN 12091 – Tests for water vapour transmission, bending, shear, freeze-thaw resistance, and other behaviors

Together, these standards provide a rigorous framework to assess and ensure the dimensional accuracy, durability, and performance of thermal insulation products in building applications.
