Overview - EN 12699:2015 (Execution of special geotechnical work - Displacement piles)
EN 12699:2015 sets out the general principles for the execution of displacement piles - piles installed without excavation or removal of in‑situ material (except for limiting heave/vibration or removing obstructions). It covers installation methods such as impact driving, vibration, pressing, screwing or combinations thereof, and applies to prefabricated and cast‑in‑situ displacement piles of regular shape. Materials included: steel, cast iron, concrete/mortar, timber, grout and combinations. The Standard applies to single piles, pile groups and concrete sheet piles, and is intended to work alongside Eurocode 7 (EN 1997).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions - clear classification of displacement piles, exclusions (e.g., mixed in‑situ columns, bored piles, micropiles).
- Information and geotechnical investigation - data needed for safe execution and installation sequencing.
- Materials and products - requirements for prefabricated and cast‑in‑situ piles, grout, reinforcement and corrosion protection.
- Design considerations - geometric tolerances, pile spacing, base/shaft enlargements, driving assistance and impact driving guidance.
- Execution and equipment - methods and equipment for impact hammers, vibrating hammers, screw and jacked piles, drive tubes and ancillary gear.
- Cast in situ & grouted piles - procedures for temporary/permanent casing, grouting during/after driving and base enlargements.

The article discusses the European Standard EN 12699:2015, which sets guidelines for the execution of displacement piles. Displacement piles are piles that are installed in the ground without excavation or removal of material, except for limited heave and/or vibration control or removing obstructions. The piles can be made of steel, cast iron, concrete, timber, grout, or a combination of these materials. The standard covers prefabricated, cast in situ, or a combination of these methods to form displacement piles of regular shape. The standard does not impose limitations on the dimensions, length, or rake of the piles. It applies to single piles, pile groups, and concrete sheet piles. However, it does not cover columns constructed through ground improvement techniques or other types of piles such as bored piles, steel and timber sheet pile walls, and micropiles, which have their own specific standards.
