Overview
EN 12192-1:2002 is a European Standard established by CEN focusing on granulometry analysis for the dry components of premixed mortar used in concrete repair systems. Specifically, it outlines a test method for determining the particle size distribution of dry components in repair mortar mixes with maximum particle sizes of 8 mm or 10 mm. This method is critical for ensuring consistent quality and performance in products designed for the protection and repair of concrete structures.
Unlike separate aggregates whose particle size distribution is measured according to the EN 933 series, EN 12192-1:2002 targets the premixed dry components of mortar repair products as defined under prEN 1504-3. It complements related methods, such as EN 12192-2, which covers fillers for polymer bonding agents.
Key Topics
- Scope: Method for measurement of particle size distribution of dry mortar components in concrete repair systems with particles up to 10 mm.
- Test principle: Nested test sieves agitate the sample, separating particles by size; each fraction’s mass is quantified to determine size distribution.
- Sample preparation: Samples are oven-dried under controlled temperatures (105 ± 5 °C or 60 ± 5 °C when additives require) until consistent weight is achieved.
- Sieving procedure: Mechanical or manual sieving continues until less than 1% of retained material passes through each sieve during one minute of sieving.
- Equipment: Utilizes calibrated test sieves conforming to ISO 3310-1, ventilation-controlled ovens, balances with 0.1 g accuracy, and specialized pans.
- Reporting: Results expressed as percentage retained and passing per sieve, with detailed test reports including sampling, method deviations, equipment, and fibre content if applicable.
- Complementary standards: References EN 1504-1 for terminology, EN 933 for separate aggregate tests, and EN 1015-2 for sampling mortars.
Applications
- Ensuring quality control in manufacturing of repair mortars for concrete structures.
- Assisting laboratories and manufacturers in performing consistent granulometric analysis of repair mortar components.
- Supporting compliance with European regulations for repair products and systems under EN 1504 series.
- Facilitating material optimization, guaranteeing the suitability of mortar mixes for specific structural or non-structural repair needs.
- Providing reliable data for product development, enabling manufacturers to adjust formulations for desired particle size distribution and performance.
Related Standards
- EN 1504-3: Defines repair product and system requirements, including structural and non-structural repair of concrete.
- EN 933 series: Describes methods for determining particle size distribution of aggregates using standardized sieving.
- EN 1015-2: Details procedures for bulk sampling and preparation of mortar test specimens.
- EN 12192-2: Focuses on granulometric analysis of fillers used in polymer bonding agents for repair mortars.
- ISO 3310-1: Specifies technical requirements for test sieves used in granulometry testing.
By adhering to EN 12192-1:2002, professionals in construction materials and concrete repair can ensure that premixed mortars meet stringent particle size criteria, thereby optimizing repair quality and enhancing durability of concrete structures. This standard plays a vital role in the standardization and evaluation of repair mortars across Europe, ensuring consistency, reliability, and performance in concrete infrastructure maintenance.
