Overview
EN 772-20:2000/A1:2005 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the methods of testing for masonry units, focusing on the determination of flatness of faces of masonry units. This standard is essential for ensuring the quality and uniformity of masonry materials such as concrete blocks, bricks, and other masonry units used in construction.
The amendment A1, approved in 2004, updates the original 2000 document to refine the testing procedures and reporting requirements specifically related to the flatness measurement of masonry surfaces. Compliance with EN 772-20:2000/A1:2005 enhances construction accuracy, structural integrity, and aesthetic consistency.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
EN 772-20:2000/A1:2005 applies to the flatness testing of masonry unit surfaces. It excludes previous references to aggregate concrete and natural stone, focusing broadly on masonry units including manufactured concrete blocks.Sampling Procedures
The standard requires a sample size of six units for testing, except for bed face flatness determination where only three units are sampled.Measurement Techniques
The flatness is determined by:- Measuring the diagonals of the masonry unit surface with a straight edge to the nearest 0.5 mm.
- Using a feeler gauge to measure deviations between the unit surface and the straight edge to the nearest 0.05 mm.
- Special attention to surface shape: distinctions are made between concave, convex, or other surface configurations.
Calculation and Expression of Results
Flatness results are expressed with precision:- Mean length of diagonals to the nearest millimetre.
- Maximum and mean deviations from flatness reported to the nearest 0.1 mm.
- Specific reporting for bed face flatness based on largest individual maximum distances.
Reporting Requirements
Detailed test reports must include sampling details, measurement data per surface, concavity or convexity explanations, and any relevant remarks in accordance with the standard.
Applications
Quality Control in Masonry Production
Manufacturers of concrete blocks, bricks, and other masonry units use EN 772-20:2000/A1:2005 to verify that product surfaces meet stringent flatness requirements, ensuring the units are suitable for precise construction applications.Construction and Structural Engineering
Flatness of masonry units directly affects mortar joint thickness and uniformity, impacting the durability and visual appeal of constructed walls and facades. This standard helps construction engineers specify and validate masonry components' dimensional tolerances.Compliance and Certification
Masonry units tested according to EN 772-20 support compliance with broader European construction standards, facilitating inclusion in national standards and certified building materials databases throughout CEN member countries.
Related Standards
EN 771 Series
EN 772-20 links closely with parts of the EN 771 series, which specify product requirements and testing methods for different types of masonry units, such as:- EN 771-1: Clay masonry units
- EN 771-2: Calcium silicate masonry units
- EN 771-4: Concrete masonry units
EN 772 Series
EN 772 includes various test methods for masonry units, with Part 20 dealing specifically with flatness. Other parts cover properties like compressive strength, water absorption, and dimensional tolerances.CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations
Compliance with amendment A1 aligns with CEN and CENELEC protocols, ensuring harmonized implementation across numerous European countries including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
