Overview
The EN ISO 22717:2015/A1:2022 standard is a critical amendment to the existing ISO 22717:2015, addressing the microbiological detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in cosmetics. Developed collaboratively by ISO/TC 217 and CEN/TC 392 under the supervision of CEN, it was officially approved in September 2022 and published to harmonize cosmetic microbiology testing across European nations and beyond.
This amendment introduces vital updates in the methodology, specifically revising enrichment broths used to detect Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a common and potentially harmful pathogen in cosmetics. Compliance with this standard ensures product safety, regulatory adherence, and maintenance of consumer health by facilitating accurate and reliable microbiological analysis.
Key Topics
Scope of Amendment
EN ISO 22717:2015/A1:2022 modifies the detection procedure for Pseudomonas aeruginosa in cosmetic products, an essential pathogen monitoring parameter in cosmetic microbiology.New Enrichment Medium: Modified Eugon LT Broth
The amendment introduces an alternative enrichment broth named Modified Eugon LT broth, detailing its specific composition and preparation method:- Composition includes pancreatic digest of casein, papaic digest of soybean meal, sodium chloride, L-cystine, sodium sulphite, glucose, egg lecithin, polysorbate 80, sodium lauryl ether sulfate, and water.
- Preparation instructions prescribe dissolving ingredients in boiling water, sterilization at 121 °C for 15 minutes, and pH adjustment to 7.0 ± 0.2. This new broth offers improved or alternative conditions for the selective growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa during microbiological testing.
Methodological Updates
The amendment lays out precise technical changes to the microbiological methods section, specifically enhancing subsection 5.3.3 to include the Modified Eugon LT broth as a validated alternative, expanding testing flexibility.Regulatory Implementation
The standard has been mandated for adoption by CEN members, including all European Union countries plus the UK, Turkey, and others, with a compliance deadline by March 2023 to replace any conflicting national standards.
Applications
Cosmetic Product Safety Testing
Laboratories and manufacturers apply this standard during routine microbiological quality control to detect Pseudomonas aeruginosa, preventing contaminated products from reaching consumers.Regulatory Compliance
Helps companies meet European regulatory requirements and international safety expectations in microbiological testing of cosmetics.Quality Assurance in Production
Incorporation of the modified broth medium enhances robustness and reliability of microbial detection, supporting better quality assurance practices.Research and Development
Cosmetic formulators and microbiologists use this standard as a reference to optimize preservation and formulation strategies to inhibit Pseudomonas aeruginosa contamination.
