This document describes a classification of metallic blast-cleaning abrasives for the preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products.
It specifies the characteristics which are required for the complete designation of such abrasives.
This document applies to abrasives supplied in the "new" or unused condition only. It does not apply to abrasives either during or after use.
NOTE Although this document has been developed specifically to meet requirements for preparation of steelwork, the properties specified will generally be appropriate for use when preparing other material surfaces, or components, using blast-cleaning techniques. These techniques are described in ISO 8504‑2.

Overview
The prEN ISO 11124-1:2025 standard, titled Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products - Specifications for metallic blast-cleaning abrasives - Part 1: General introduction and classification, is developed by CEN to provide a comprehensive classification system for metallic blast-cleaning abrasives. These abrasives are primarily used for surface preparation of steel substrates prior to painting or coating.
This standard focuses on the characteristics necessary for a complete and precise designation of abrasives in their new, unused condition. It addresses the categorization by material, particle shape, and size to ensure optimal surface preparation. While tailored for steel substrates, the classification and specifications are also applicable to other materials prepared with blast-cleaning techniques, in line with ISO 8504-2 standards.
Key Topics
Abrasive Classification
The standard defines metallic abrasives by type (e.g., chilled iron, cast steel, stainless steel), origin, and manufacture. Each abrasive type is assigned an abbreviated code for identification.Particle Shape
Initial particle shapes are classified into four categories:- Shot (round) - symbol S
- Grit (angular) - symbol G
- Cylindrical (sharp-edged) - symbol C
- Irregular (non-uniform) - symbol I
Particle Size Range
Abrasives consist of mixtures with varying particle sizes. Size grades are indicated by a three-digit code representing nominal particle size in hundredths of a millimeter (e.g., 100 represents 1.00 mm).Full Designation System
Abrasives are fully designated using the format:Abrasive ISO 11124 [Type Abbreviation]/[Shape Symbol][Size Grade]
Optional hardness ranges (Vickers hardness values) may be added to specify abrasive hardness.Packaging and Traceability
The standard mandates clear labeling of all abrasives with full product codes on packaging units. Traceability marking by production lot or period is strongly recommended.Safety Note
It highlights that equipment and abrasives can pose hazards during use, emphasizing the importance of user instructions and precautions.
Applications
prEN ISO 11124-1:2025 is vital for industries involved in the surface preparation of steel and other metallic substrates before applying paints, coatings, or related protective products. Typical applications include:
Industrial Coating and Painting
Optimal surface profile creation ensures strong adhesion and longevity of protective coatings on steel structures such as bridges, ships, and pipelines.Blasting Process Control
Selection of appropriate metallic abrasives based on material, shape, and size enhances cleaning efficiency while achieving desired surface roughness.Quality Assurance and Specification Compliance
Full abrasive designation allows procurement accuracy and traceability, facilitating quality control and regulatory compliance in construction and manufacturing sectors.Maintenance and Repair
Standardized abrasives support consistent surface preparation during refurbishment of painted steel surfaces in infrastructure and industrial plants.

Introduction
This document is one of a number of parts of ISO 11124 specifying requirements for metallic abrasives for
blast-cleaning.
Test methods for metallic blast-cleaning abrasives are given in the various parts of ISO 11125 (see Annex A).
The requirements for non-metallic abrasives commonly used for blast-cleaning are specified in the various
parts of ISO 11126. Test methods to be used to define these requirements are contained in the various parts
of ISO 11127 (see Annex A).
Abrasive blast-cleaning techniques are widely used to clean and prepare surfaces. During work on
development of a series of International Standards dealing with the preparati
