Overview - EN 1829-2:2008 (High‑pressure water jet machines: Hoses & Connectors)

EN 1829-2:2008 is the CEN (European) standard that specifies safety requirements for hoses, hose lines and connectors used with high‑pressure water jet machines (see prEN 1829‑1 for machines). It is a Type C machine‑specific standard that addresses significant hazards arising from assembly, operation and servicing when equipment is used as intended or under reasonably foreseeable misuse. The standard excludes leak shields and does not cover scalding or chemical irritation from liquids.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & hazards: protection against hose bursting, leaking, connector failure, whipping, incorrect assembly, and length changes due to pressure transients.
  • Burst pressure ratios:
    • For MAWP ≤ 3000 bar, burst pressure ≥ 2.5 × MAWP.
    • For MAWP > 3000 bar, burst pressure ≥ 2 × MAWP.
  • Pressure/temperature limits: hoses suitable for operation between −10 °C and +70 °C.
  • Change in length: expansion/contraction under pressure limited to ±2% of original length.
  • Tensile strength: hose lines must resist a tensile force equal to pressure × internal cross‑sectional area corresponding to 1.5 × MAWP or 1000 N, whichever is lower.
  • Connector safety & anti‑loosening: measures to prevent unintentional loosening under pressure; connector safety devices are mandatory where persons are present and either input power > 40 kW or working pressure > 500 bar (risk‑based assessment applies).
  • Verification tests (type and production tests): leakage, change‑in‑length, cold‑bend (at −10 °C ±2 °C), burst, impulse test (≥ 20 000 cycles; medium at 70 °C ±5 °C; pressure ≥ MAWP and ≤ 1.05× MAWP), tensile, and proof pressure (typically 1.5× MAWP; 1.2× for >3000 bar).
  • Marking & information: hoses marked at ≤ 500 mm intervals with manufacturer ID, MAWP, nominal bore, manufacture date; hose lines labelled with assembly ID, MAWP, assembly date and reference EN 1829‑2. Connectors must show manufacturer and MAWP. Operating instructions as per EN ISO 12100‑2.

Practical applications - who uses EN 1829‑2

  • Manufacturers of high‑pressure hoses, hose assemblies and connectors - for design, testing and factory‑acceptance criteria.
  • Test laboratories - to perform the specified hydrostatic, impulse and tensile tests.
  • OEMs and system integrators of pressure washers, industrial cleaners, pipe‑cleaning equipment and floor treatment appliances - to select compatible hose systems and ensure CE‑compliance.
  • Maintenance teams and safety officers - for inspection, marking, replacement intervals and safe assembly/servicing procedures.
