Products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structures - Test methods - Part 1: Determination of linear shrinkage for polymers and surface protection systems (SPS)

This European Standard is one of a series dealing with products and systems for the protection and repair of concrete structure. It specifies a method for determining the linear shrinkage of solvent free multicomponent cold curing reactive resins.  The method is not suitable for rubber elastic and very fast curing products.

Overview

EN 12617-1:2003 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies a test method for determining the linear shrinkage of polymers and surface protection systems (SPS) used in the protection and repair of concrete structures. Specifically, it applies to solvent-free, multicomponent cold-curing reactive resins. This standard provides a crucial method to assess the dimensional stability of polymer-based protection products, which directly impacts the longevity and performance of concrete repair systems. It is important to note that this method is not suitable for rubber-elastic or very fast curing products due to their different curing behaviors.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application

    • Defines the procedure for measuring linear shrinkage in polymers and surface protection systems aimed at concrete repair.
    • Excludes rubber-elastic systems and very fast curing products, which require alternative testing due to their relaxation effects or short pot life.
  • Test Methodology

    • Use of two 1000 mm long steel troughs to cast and cure the resin specimen.
    • Measurement of shrinkage by comparing the original length against the cured sample’s length after specific curing periods.
    • Initial curing carried out at 21 ± 2 °C with 60 ± 10% relative humidity for 7 days, followed by additional drying at 70 ± 2 °C and restorage at ambient conditions.
    • Precision measurement instruments capable of 0.05 mm accuracy ensure reliable data.
  • Sampling and Preparation

    • Samples must be representative and homogeneous, prepared according to EN ISO 15528 and EN ISO 1513 standards.
    • Proper mixing and avoidance of air bubbles are emphasized to ensure accuracy.
  • Reporting Requirements

    • Test reports include detailed information on sample identity, preparation, storage conditions, testing instruments, and shrinkage values (s1 and s2).
    • Transparency in deviations from the standard procedure and inclusion of precision data (when available) is mandatory.

Applications

EN 12617-1:2003 serves as a fundamental quality control and research tool for:

  • Concrete Protection Systems – Ensuring polymer-based surface coatings and protection layers maintain dimensional stability, preventing premature cracking or delamination.
  • Infrastructure Repair – Assessing contraction properties of repair mortars and resins used on bridges, tunnels, and buildings to guarantee durable repairs.
  • Material Development – Facilitating manufacturers in formulating new solvent-free, cold curing polymers engineered to minimize shrinkage and improve adhesion and mechanical performance.
  • Regulatory Compliance – Assisting construction material suppliers in meeting European standards for product certification and acceptance in international markets.

Related Standards

EN 12617-1:2003 is part of a series of standards addressing testing methods for products intended for concrete repair and protection. Key related documents include:

  • EN 12617-2: Determination of volumetric shrinkage for polymer injection products, focusing on crack injection materials with polymer binders.
  • EN 12617-3: Measurement of early age linear shrinkage for structural bonding agents, critical for bonding performance assessment.
  • EN 12617-4: Test methods for evaluating both shrinkage and expansion characteristics of repair materials.
  • EN 1504-1: Definitions, requirements, and conformity evaluation for products and systems used in concrete repair and protection.

Utilizing EN 12617-1:2003 along with these complementary standards provides a comprehensive framework to ensure the quality, performance, and durability of polymer-based concrete repair and protection systems.
