Overview

EN 17134-1:2024 is a European Standard developed by CEN addressing the determination of biocide additives-specifically 2-phenylphenol (OPP) and triclosan-in textiles and textile products. The standard details a method using liquid chromatography for the quantitative analysis of these preservative agents. Accurate testing for biocidal substances in textiles is essential for compliance with the European Biocidal Product Regulation (BPR) and for ensuring product safety, quality, and regulatory conformity within the textile industry.

Key Topics

  • Scope: The standard specifies testing procedures to determine the presence and quantity of 2-phenylphenol and triclosan in textile materials and related products.
  • Analytical Method:
    • Utilizes liquid chromatography with diode array detection (DAD) and/or mass selective detection (MS).
    • Involves sample preparation, extraction, filtration, and chromatographic analysis for precise quantification.
  • Sample Preparation: Involves cutting textile samples into small pieces and extracting preservatives using acetonitrile.
  • Detection Limits:
    • Able to quantify OPP and triclosan with limits of quantification suitable for regulatory requirements.
  • Test Report Requirements:
    • Identification and documentation of samples
    • Details on test methodology and liquid chromatography type
    • Quantitative results expressed in mg/kg
    • Reporting of any deviations or unusual observations during testing

Applications

EN 17134-1:2024 delivers clear procedures and benchmarks for a range of practical applications:

  • Regulatory Compliance: Textile manufacturers and importers use this standard to demonstrate adherence to the European Biocidal Product Regulation, ensuring that treated textiles and textile articles meet current legal requirements regarding the use of authorized biocidal substances.
  • Quality Assurance in Textile Manufacturing: The standard supports consistent quality control by enabling reliable detection of 2-phenylphenol and triclosan, commonly used for microbial control in textiles.
  • Product Safety: Testing according to EN 17134-1:2024 helps ensure that biocide levels are within safe and approved thresholds, thus reducing health and environmental risks associated with treated textiles.
  • Market Access: Compliance with EN 17134-1:2024 supports the free movement of textile goods within the EU market by meeting harmonized standards for biocidal content.
  • Laboratory Testing and Accreditation: Laboratories providing verification and conformity assessment services to the textile industry rely on the standard for standardized procedures and reporting formats.

Related Standards

Organizations implementing EN 17134-1:2024 for textiles and biocide testing should consider the following related standards:

  • EN 17134-2: Determination of chlorophenol-based preservatives in textiles using gas chromatography.
  • EN ISO 3696: Water for analytical laboratory use-Specification and test methods.
  • EN ISO 4787: Laboratory glass and plastic ware-Volumetric instruments-Methods for testing of capacity and for use.
  • EN ISO 5089: Textiles-Preparation of laboratory test samples and test specimens for chemical testing.
  • Regulation (EU) No 528/2012 (BPR): Legal framework for the use of biocidal products in Europe.

Practical Value

By following EN 17134-1:2024, textile producers, importers, and labs can ensure:

  • Accurate, reproducible results for biocide additive content in textiles
  • Simplified compliance with stringent EU regulations
  • Enhancement of consumer safety through controlled use of biocidal agents in finished products
  • Streamlined market access by meeting standardized reporting and technical criteria for textile products across Europe

Implementing this standard is a vital step for any organization committed to producing or selling textiles that are safe, legal, and of high quality within the European marketplace.
