This European Standard applies to:
- machines for stacking or dehacking fired or unfired fine clay wall tiles and floor tiles on/from fixed or movable supports (see Figure A.1);
- machines for loading or unloading fired or unfired fine clay wall tiles and floor tiles into/from containers (see Figures A.2 and A.4);
- machines for loading or unloading fired or unfired fine clay wall tiles and floor tiles on/from stackable frames (see Figure A.3).
1.2 This European Standard deals with the significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to ceramic machines for loading and unloading of fine clay tiles, when they are used as intended and under the conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer (see Clause 4). This European Standard does not deal with noise. This standard deals with the preventive measures to minimise these hazards arising from the commissioning, the operation and maintenance.
1.3 The interface with the transport system for stacks, containers is covered by this European Standard for some examples not for all possibilities (see e.g. 5.6.4, 5.6.7).
1.4 This European Standard is not applicable to:
- machines for setting and dehacking of split tiles and roof tiles;
- auxiliary machinery such as vacuum generators.

5.2.1 The areas situated under vertically moving parts (e.g. containers, compensators, roller conveyors and telescopic arm, automatic grippers, automatic devices which move frames, automatic vacuum) lifts shall be made inaccessible for persons during downward movements by fixed and/or movable interlocking guards (see 3.2, 3.3 and 3.5 of EN 953:1997). The safety circuit shall be in accordance with Category 1 of EN 954-1:1996 (see e.g. Annex A (informative) of EN 1088:1995). Where inlet and/or outlet of devices to move or remove containers to/from the danger zone (pushing or pulling mechanisms) are intended, the passage zone shall be safeguarded by means of opto-electronic protective devices minimum according to type 2 of EN 61496-1:2004, (see also 5.6.5). 5.2.2 For maintenance or repairs requiring access to areas according to 5.2.1 mechanical devices shall be provided which prevent any suspended parts from falling even when the lifting system or a part of it has broken down. NOTE It should be taken into account that the frame can be deformed by dynamic stress by a falling container or lift reducing or nullifying the effectiveness of the ratchet and pawl arrangement. This mechanical stopping device shall be: an automatic device (at least of Category 2 of EN 954-1:1996), e.g. ratchet and pawl arrangements; or a manual device in connection with proper procedures to be adopted by the user, (e.g. bolts preventing the downward movement beyond a certain point). The user handbook shall indicate these procedures clearly, and signs shall be displayed on the machine. 5.2.3 Conveyors shall comply with EN 619:2002. 5.3 Handling by vacuum lift 5.3.1 Handling by vacuum lift shall be located out of the reach of persons according to Table 1 of EN 294:1992. This requirement does not apply if:
mass of a single tile does not exceed 1 kg, if fired, or 5 kg, if unfired; and maximum lifting height from floor level is not more then 2 m; and weight of the single tile multiplied by the maximum falling height for the tile is lower than 5 joule.
