Overview
FprEN 6129 is a draft European Standard developed under the CEN (European Committee for Standardization), as part of the aerospace series. This document specifies the configuration, dimensions, tolerances, and mass of a high strength, protruding head, pulltype blind bolt made of stainless steel, intended for use in aerospace applications. The blind bolt is engineered to meet the rigorous demands of aerospace fastener assemblies, ensuring reliability, performance, and safety where access is limited to one side of the structure.
The standard supersedes EN 6129:2016, incorporating updated requirements and aligning with current aerospace engineering practices.
Key Topics
- Configuration and Dimensions: FprEN 6129 details the physical characteristics of the blind bolt, including head style, grip range, and designated diameter codes, all vital for precise application in aerospace assemblies.
- Material and Finish: Specifies the use of high-quality stainless steel (such as A-286 CRES and 316 CRES), guiding the preferred passivation and protective coatings to ensure corrosion and heat resistance in demanding environments.
- Mechanical Properties: Sets out minimum requirements for static strength, tensile preload, spindle retention, and mass, supporting robust structural performance and safety in aerospace applications.
- Marking and Designation: Outlines the marking system for traceability and identification on fastener heads, in compliance with the EN 2424.
- Normative References: Links to essential standards such as EN 4473 (fastener coatings), SAE AMS2700 (passivation), and NASM8975 (general fastener specifications), ensuring international interoperability and compliance.
Applications
The FprEN 6129 blind bolt standard is integral to the design, manufacturing, and maintenance of aerospace structures, especially where access is only available from one side, such as in:
- Aircraft fuselage and wing assembly: For securing panels, frames, and structural subassemblies.
- Aerospace engine mounting: Where high strength and reliable fastening are critical, and accessibility may be restricted.
- Spacecraft and satellite construction: Ensures assembly integrity in environments that experience vibration, thermal variation, and corrosion.
- Maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO): Provides specification for replacement parts, critical to safety and regulatory compliance.
By adhering to FprEN 6129, aerospace manufacturers, suppliers, and maintenance teams achieve standardized, high-quality blind fastener solutions, reducing risks associated with mismatched hardware and ensuring long-term durability.
Related Standards
FprEN 6129 references several other crucial standards that complement and support its implementation:
- EN 2424: Marking of aerospace products.
- EN 4473: Technical specification for aluminium pigmented coatings for fasteners.
- NASM8975: General specification for aerospace blind fasteners.
- SAE AMS2700: Passivation process for corrosion-resistant steels.
- SAE AMS5687, AMS5690, AMS5737: Material specifications for corrosion and heat-resistant alloys.
- SAE AS5272, AS87132, MIL-PRF-46010, DOD-L-85645: Specifications for various fastener lubricants.
Utilizing these related standards ensures a holistic approach to aerospace fastener quality, performance, and traceability across the global aerospace industry.
