Welding, brazing, soldering and cutting - Nomenclature of processes and reference numbers (ISO 4063:2023)

This document establishes a nomenclature for:
—    welding;
—    brazing, soldering and weld brazing;
—    thermal cutting;
with each process identified by a reference number.
It covers the main processes (one digit), groups (two digits) and sub-groups (three digits). The reference number for any process has a maximum of three digits. This system is intended as an aid in computerization and the drafting of, for example, drawings, working papers and welding procedure specifications, and enables the uniform international designation of the processes.
This document does not cover all process variants. The process numbers can be supplemented with additional information for variants not listed.

Dieses Dokument legt eine Nomenklatur fest für:
   Schweißen,
   Hartlöten, Weichlöten und Fugenlöten,
   thermisches Schneiden,
wobei jedes Verfahren durch eine Ordnungsnummer gekennzeichnet ist.
Es umfasst die Hauptprozesse (einstellig), Gruppen (zweistellig) und Untergruppen (dreistellig). Die Ordnungsnummern für jeden Prozess sind höchstens dreistellig. Dieses System ist als Hilfsmittel für die Computerisierung und die Erstellung von z. B. Zeichnungen, Arbeitspapieren und Schweißanweisungen gedacht und ermöglicht eine einheitliche internationale Bezeichnung der Prozesse.
Dieses Dokument deckt nicht alle Prozessvarianten ab. Für nicht aufgeführte Varianten können die Ordnungsnummern mit zusätzlichen Informationen ergänzt werden.

Le présent document établit une nomenclature, pour:
—    le soudage;
—    le brasage fort, le brasage tendre et le soudobrasage;
—    le coupage thermique;
chaque procédé étant identifié par un numéro de référence.
Il couvre les groupes principaux procédés (un chiffre), les groupes (deux chiffres) et les sous-groupes (trois chiffres). Le numéro de référence pour un procédé donné au maximum trois chiffres.
Ce système est prévu pour faciliter l'informatisation et la rédaction, par exemple de dessins, de documents de travail, de descriptifs de modes opératoires de soudage, et permet une désignation internationale uniforme des procédés.
Le présent document ne couvre pas toutes les variantes de procédés. Les numéros de procédés peuvent être complétés par des informations supplémentaires pour les variantes non énumérées.

Varjenje, trdo in mehko spajkanje ter rezanje - Seznam postopkov in številčne oznake (ISO 4063:2023)

V tem dokumentu je določen seznam za:
–    varjenje;
–    mehko spajkanje, trdo spajkanje in spajkanje zvarov;
–    toplotno rezanje;
pri čemer je vsak postopek identificiran z referenčno številko.
Zajema glavne postopke (enomestna številka), skupine (dvomestna številka) in podskupine (trimestna številka). Referenčna številka za posamezni proces je lahko največ trimestna. Ta sistem je namenjen za pomoč pri računalniški obdelavi in pripravi dokumentov (npr. skic, delovne dokumentacije in specifikacij za varilne postopke) ter omogoča enotno mednarodno označevanje postopkov.
Ta dokument ne zajema vseh različic postopkov. Za različice, ki niso navedene, je mogoče številke postopkov dopolniti z dodatnimi informacijami.

This document (EN ISO 4063:2023) has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 44 "Welding
and allied processes" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 121 “Welding and allied
processes” the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by October 2023, and conflicting national standards shall
be withdrawn at the latest by October 2023.

1 Scope

4.1 General
Where a full designation is required for a joining process, it shall have the following structure: the
number of this document (i.e. “ISO 4063”), separated by a dash from the reference number of the
process, as shown in these examples.
EXAMPLE 1 Process “Cold pressure welding” with reference number 48 is designated as:

4.2 Hybrid joining processes
When multiple processes are used simultaneously in one process area, the processes shall be described
using the designations for each process separated by the symbol “+”.
EXAMPLE Process “Gas laser welding” (reference number 522) together with process “Plasma arc welding”
(reference number 15) is designated as:

5.1 General
The first designation listed is the preferred one and any subsequent designations are synonyms. Terms
used in the United States of America (USA) are shown for information where there are differences.
Annex A provides supplementary options for process variants.
Annex B provides an overview for replaced and obsolete processes.
Annex C provides a list of commonly used acronyms and abbreviations for the welding processes in the
United States of America included in this document.

Introduction
In the previous editions of this document, the numbering system only covered processes for welding,
weld brazing, brazing, soldering, cutting and gouging. This allowed the use of a three-digits numbering
system, where one digit corresponds to a main process (e.g.: "1 Arc welding"), two digits to a sub-
process (e.g.: "11 Metal arc welding without gas protection"), and three digits to a sub-sub-process (e.g.:
"111 Manual metal arc welding").
The main change in this fifth edition is the incorporation of processes and reference numbers for
welding (thermal joining) of plastics, for mechanical joining and for adhesive bonding.
Because of the intrinsic limits of the three-digits system, it became necessary to adopt a four-digits
system, where the first digit corresponds to the main type of technology (i.e.: 1xxx for mechanical
joining and 2xxx for adhesive bonding), and the three following digits to the main process, sub-
processes and sub-sub-processes.
However, since any change of a given existing process and reference number can have a very strong and
negative impact in the industry, it was decided to keep the three-digits numbering system for all the
processes already covered in previous editions.

1 Scope
This International Standard establishes a nomenclature for
― welding;
― brazing, soldering and weld brazing;
― thermal cutting;
― mechanical joining;
― adhesive bonding;
with each process identified by a reference number. This document is applicable for all materials where
the joining processes are appropriate.
NOTE In addition to terms in English and French, two of the three official ISO languages, this International
Standard gives the equivalent terms in German; these are published under the responsibility of the member body
for Germany (DIN). However, only the terms given in the official languages can be considered as ISO terms.

4.2 Hybrid joining
When multiple processes are used simultaneously in one process area, the processes shall be described
using the designations for each process separated by the symbol “+”.
EXAMPLE Process “Gas laser welding” (reference number 522) together with process “Plasma arc welding”
(reference number 15) is designated as:
ISO 4063 – 522+15
4.3 Combined joining (Combination of joining processes)
When multiple processes are combined sequentially in one process area, the processes shall be
described using the designations for each process separated by the symbol “>”.
EXAMPLE Process “Self-piercing riveting” (reference number 1110) followed by process “Resistance spot
welding” (reference number 21) is designated as:
   ISO 4063 – 1110>21

5.1 General
The first term listed is the preferred term and any subsequent terms are synonyms. US terms are shown
for information where there are differences.
