Overview

EN 934-6:2019 is a European Standard developed by CEN, focusing on admixtures for concrete, mortar, and grout. This part of the EN 934 series specifies procedures for sampling, as well as the assessment and verification of the constancy of performance (AVCP) for these admixtures. It ensures that materials used in construction products maintain consistent quality and performance throughout production, delivery, and use.

This standard harmonizes sampling and quality control processes across European countries, underpinning the reliable use of admixtures in concrete technology. It supersedes the earlier EN 934-6:2001 and aligns terminology with EU Construction Products Regulation (EU 305/2011).

Key Topics

1. Sampling Procedures

The standard outlines specific sampling methodologies to ensure representative samples of admixtures are taken:

  • Sampling from Manufacturer's Stock:

    • For powdered admixtures, sub-samples from at least six bags are mixed to produce a bulk sample.
    • For liquid admixtures, samples are taken either from containers or tank loads with careful agitation and division into three equal parts for storage.
  • Sampling at Delivery: Performed before unloading to confirm product quality upon receipt.

  • Sampling for Factory Production Control: Sampling processes must be documented and follow rigorous protocols to guarantee ongoing product conformity.

  • Storage of Samples: Samples are stored in airtight containers protected from moisture and light for at least one year or until the use-by date.

2. Assessment and Verification of Constancy of Performance (AVCP)

The AVCP process ensures admixtures consistently meet performance criteria declared by manufacturers through:

  • Type Testing: Required when new formulations are introduced or changes in raw materials or formulation occur, potentially impacting admixture performance.
  • Factory Production Control (FPC): Manufacturers must maintain documented procedures and control records, perform regular inspections, and continuously monitor production processes.
  • Conformity Criteria: Admixtures must comply with the specifications and test methods detailed in other parts of the EN 934 series, assuring uniform product quality.

3. Documentation and Record Keeping

Records must capture essential data including sample date, batch identification, physical state, color, and personnel involved in sampling. This traceability supports transparency and regulatory compliance.

Applications

EN 934-6:2019 applies widely in the construction industry, particularly wherever admixtures for concrete, mortar, or grout are used for building, infrastructure, and civil engineering projects. Its practical applications include:

  • Quality assurance in manufacturing admixtures to guarantee uniform properties batch after batch.
  • Performance verification of admixtures used in concrete mixes to enhance properties such as workability, setting time, and durability.
  • Ensuring compliance with legal and contractual requirements for construction materials across EU markets.
  • Supporting manufacturers, suppliers, and contractors with a standardized procedure to minimize disputes related to product quality.

The standard promotes safety, durability, and reliability in concrete-related products by enabling consistent quality control aligned with European regulatory frameworks.

Related Standards

EN 934-6:2019 is part of the comprehensive EN 934 series dedicated to admixtures for concrete, mortar, and grout. Relevant related standards include:

  • EN 934-1: Common requirements for admixtures.
  • EN 934-2: Concrete admixtures - definitions, requirements, conformity, marking, and labelling.
  • EN 934-3: Admixtures for masonry mortar - specifications and conformity.
  • EN 934-4: Admixtures for grout used in prestressing tendons.
  • EN 934-5: Admixtures for sprayed concrete.

These parts complement EN 934-6 by detailing performance requirements, test methods, and regulatory compliance mechanisms for various admixture types and applications.

4 Sampling
4.1 General
Sampling of admixtures shall be carried out in such a way that the resulting sample is representative of
the batch to be inspected.
The following procedures shall be used:
— for type testing and in case of dispute, 4.2;
— at time of delivery, 4.3;
— for factory production control, 4.4.
If required, sampling shall be carried out in the presence of all the parties concerned.
4.2 Sampling from the manufacturer's stock
4.2.1 General
Each sample shall represent not more than one batch. For continuous production of an admixture, one
sample taken from up to 25 t may be regarded as representative.
4.2.2 Powder admixture (in packages)
The sample shall be composed of sub-samples from 6 packages (bags) or if the total number of packages
(bags) is less than 6, from all packages (bags). The sub-samples are to be taken from packages (bags)
distributed at random throughout the consignment.
One of the following procedures shall be applied:
a) where the packages contain up to 500 g, take all the contents of each package;
b) where the packages contain more than 500 g, use one of the following methods:
1) insert a sampling tube, which takes a core not less than 25 mm in diameter, into the packages
so that it takes a core of the material from substantially the entire length of the package;
2) empty one of the packages to be sampled on to a clean dry surface and mix the material. Take
