Overview

EN 15798:2022 is a European standard published by the Committee for European Normalization (CEN) that specifies requirements for filter media used in swimming pool water treatment. The document covers commonly used filter materials including virgin granular activated carbon, silica sand and gravel, pumice, pyrolyzed coal material, anthracite, and calcium carbonate. It provides detailed guidance on their physical and chemical properties, testing methods, labeling, handling, and storage to ensure effective filtration and water quality management in swimming pools. This standard applies specifically to filter media used for filtration with or without chemical action and excludes certain other materials such as diatomaceous earth and cartridge filter media.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability: Defines the types of filter media covered along with exclusions like powdered diatomaceous earth, perlite, and zeolite associated with cartridge filters.

  • Physical and Chemical Properties: Specifies purity requirements and impurity limits for each filter medium. For instance, requirements on ash content, water-soluble substances, and iodine number for activated carbon ensure the media do not adversely affect water quality.

  • Test Methods: Details standardized testing protocols for sampling and analyzing filter media to confirm compliance with physical and chemical criteria.

  • Labelling and Transportation: Outlines labeling requirements to ensure traceability, including product name, grade, supplier information, and conformity statements. It also stipulates transport regulations and incompatibilities, especially highlighting safety measures for chemically activated carbon.

  • Storage Guidelines: Provides instructions on proper storage to maintain filter media integrity, such as keeping activated carbon dry and away from oxidants, and calcium carbonate away from acids.

  • Usage Information: Describes the functional role of each media type, such as activated carbon’s use in removing excess chlorine and oxidants, and pumice or silica sand as robust filter materials for particulate removal.

Applications

EN 15798:2022 is essential for:

  • Swimming Pool Operators: Ensuring the selection and handling of compliant filter media that meet recognized standards for effective water filtration.

  • Pool Equipment Manufacturers: Designing and producing filtration systems aligned with the quality and safety parameters defined in this standard.

  • Water Treatment Specialists: Optimizing swimming pool water treatment by choosing appropriate filter media with verified physical and chemical properties.

  • Regulatory Bodies: Establishing consistent criteria for evaluating filter media quality and safety in commercial and public pool environments.

  • Importers and Distributors: Verifying product conformity and correctly labeling filter media during transportation and storage to meet legal and safety regulations.

Related Standards

The EN 15798:2022 is built upon and references several related European standards focusing on materials used in water treatment, including:

  • EN 1018: Calcium carbonate chemicals for water treatment.
  • EN 12485: Test methods for calcium carbonate and related products.
  • EN 12902: Inorganic supporting and filtering materials - Test methods.
  • EN 12904 to EN 12909: Standards covering silica sand, pumice, pyrolyzed coal material, anthracite, and granular activated carbon for water treatment.
  • EN 12915-1: Specific standard for virgin granular activated carbon.

These related standards provide complementary test methods and define detailed properties of individual filter media types used in the treatment of swimming pool water.

By adhering to EN 15798:2022, stakeholders in the swimming pool water treatment industry can ensure safe, efficient, and consistent filtration performance, helping maintain hygienic and clear water standards critical for public health and user satisfaction.
