Overview
FprEN IEC 61300-2-2:2026 is a key international standard developed by CLC for the evaluation of fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components, focusing on the mating durability of connectors and related devices. This standard outlines basic test and measurement procedures designed to assess the ability of fibre optic connectors to withstand repeated cycles of mating and unmating while maintaining optimal optical and mechanical performance. By specifying methods for testing mating durability, this standard supports the reliability, performance, and lifespan of fibre optic networks in a variety of applications, including telecommunication, data centers, and industrial automation.
Key Topics
Mating Durability Testing
The standard specifies procedures for repeatedly mating and unmating fibre optic connectors and components, simulating expected usage to evaluate potential mechanical degradation and changes in optical performance.Test Configurations
Two primary device configurations are addressed:- Plug-adapter-plug
- Plug-socket
Performance Assessment
Assessment includes monitoring attenuation and return loss in accordance with referenced IEC documents, ensuring that devices meet the necessary optical performance criteria throughout testing cycles.Cleaning and Inspection
Guidelines are set for inspecting and cleaning devices before, during, and after tests, referencing industry-accepted cleaning practices to maintain accurate results.Severity Levels
The standard introduces performance categories and severity levels (number of mating/unmating cycles) for different connector types, supporting tailored testing for various application needs.Reporting Requirements
Detailed procedures require documentation of device characteristics, test severity, examination methods, pass/fail criteria, and any deviations from the prescribed process.
Applications
FprEN IEC 61300-2-2:2026 delivers practical value to a range of sectors that depend on the reliability of fibre optic interconnects. Key application areas include:
Telecommunications
Ensures that connectors in networks can handle the rigors of regular installation, maintenance, and reconfiguration without degradation in signal quality.Data Centers
Verifies the long-term performance of patch cords and interconnects that experience frequent changes due to capacity upgrades and troubleshooting.Industrial and Harsh Environments
Supports the use of hardened fibre optic components in challenging environments, confirming mechanical and optical integrity after repeated connections.Product Development and Quality Assurance
Provides manufacturers and testing laboratories with standardized methods to qualify components and assemblies for release to market or for compliance with customer specifications.
By applying this standard, organizations can minimize downtime, reduce maintenance costs, and ensure high data transmission quality across complex fibre optic infrastructures.

FOREWORD
35 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
36 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
37 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
38 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
39 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
40 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
41 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
42 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
43 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
44 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
45 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
46 interested IEC National Committees.
47 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
48 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
49 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
50 misinterpretation by any end user.
51 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
52 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
53 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
54 5) IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any equipment
55 declared to be in conformity with an IEC Publication.
56 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
57 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
58 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
59 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
60 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC Publications.
61 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
62 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
63 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
64 rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
