Part 1: General requirements and measuring methods
FOREWORD

1) The formal decisions or agreements of the I E C on technical matters, prepared by Technical Committees on which all the

National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as possible, an international

consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.

2) They have the form of recommendations for international use and they are accepted by the National Committees in that

sense.

In order to promote international unification, the I E C expresses the wish that all National Committees should adopt

the text of the I E C recommendation for their national rules in so far as national conditions will permit. Any divergence

between the I E C recommendations and the corresponding national rules should, as far as possible, be clearly

indicated in the latter.
PREFACE

This recommendation has been prepared by Sub-Committee 46D, Connectors for R.F. Cables, of I E C

Technical Committee No. 46, Cables, Wires and Waveguides for Telecommunication Equipment.

A first draft was discussed at the meeting held in The Hague in 1970. As a result of this meeting, a final

draft, document 46D(Central Office)5, was submitted to the National Committees for approval under the

Six Months' Rule in July 1971. Amendments, document 46D(Central Office)14, were submitted to the

National Committees for approval under the Two Months' Procedure in September 1972.

Part 1: General requirements and measuring methods
This recommendation shall be used in conjunction with:
— I E C Publication 68, Basic Environmental Testing Procedures;
— ISO Recommendation R 286;
— ISO Recommendation R 370.
The schedule of test shall be specified in the detail specification.
1. Scope

This recommendation relates to rigid precision coaxial lines and their associated precision

connectors for instrumentation, to be used within the limits for temperature, humidity and

pressure as given in the standard atmospheric conditions for testing in Publication 68-1, Part 1:

General. Precision connectors can be of the hermaphroditic type, flange type or of the pin and

socket type.

This recommendation covers requirements for precision connectors mounted on rigid precision

coaxial lines and gives mechanical data for coupling mechanism.
2. Object

The aim of this recommendation is to specify the following for rigid precision coaxial lines

and their associated connectors:

a) the requirements necessary to ensure compatibility and, as far as essential, interchangeability;

b) the test methods;
c) the dimensional deviations allowed to ensure adequate electrical performance.
SECTION ONE — GENERAL
Terminology
3.1 Technical terms

In accordance with the International Electrotechnical Vocabulary (I.V.E.), I E C Publication 50.

In addition, the following terms are used in this recommendation.
3.1.1. Size

For precision lines, the size is defined as the rounded-off inner diameter of the outer conductor,

expressed in millimetres.
3.1.2 . Wall thickness

The basic wall thickness is defined as half the difference between nominal outside and inside

diameters.

3.1.3 Ellipticity
of inner or outer conductor is defined by the formula:

3.1.4 Excentricity
Excentricity e =

Ae = deviation of the axis of the outside diameter of the centre conductor from the axis of the

inside diameter of the outer conductor.
Curvature
3.1.5

Curvature is defined as the maximum deviation of the actual axis of the coaxial line from a

straight line of specified length connecting two points on that axis.
3.1.6 Attenuation and insertion loss

The attenuation of a coaxial line is defined as the reduction of transmitted power expressed

in decibels per unit of length. In the case of connectors, the specifications refer to the insertion

loss of a mated pair.

The theoretical cut-off frequency of a coaxial line is the calculated frequency at which the

mode theoretically first occurs (the practical value will be different from this).

3.1.7.2 Maximum frequency

The maximum frequency up to which all the requirements shown in the detail specification

are maintained.
Laboratory precision connector (LPC)
3.1.8

The laboratory precision connector (LPC) is a precision connector with no dielectric support

for use with air-dielectric line standards.
General precision connector (GPC)
3.1.9

The general precision connector (GPC) is a precision connector with a self-contained dielectric

support and all component parts captive for general use. The GPC must be capable of supporting

the unsupported LPC inner conductor.

3.1.10 Centre contact
Hermaphroditic connectors
3.1.10.1

Hermaphroditic connectors have a centre conductor contact which is normally spring-loaded

in the axial direction.
Flange connectors
3.1.10.2

Flange connectors have a component, normally incorporating resilient members on both ends

with or without a dielectric anchoring member, for connecting together two tubular or solid

rigid centre conductors.
3.1.10.3 Pin and socket connectors

Pin and socket connectors have a pin and socket centre conductor design, the socket or pin

of which may or may not be slotted.
3.1.11 Outer conductor connection
3.1.11.1 Hermaphroditic connectors

Hermaphroditic connectors normally have a standardized interface which is provided with a

thread for screwing on the coupling mechanism. In certain cases, alternative coupling mechanisms

are specified in the detail specification.
3.1.11.2 Flange connectors

Flange connectors have a component normally attached to a rigid outer conductor and used

for connection to another flange mounted to another rigid outer conductor.
3.1.11.3 Pin and socket connectors

Pin and socket connectors have a standardized interface consisting of butting and/or wiping

electrical conductors and a coupling mechanism.
3.1.11.4 Interface

Interface is the expression for a specific construction of the end of a precision coaxial line

which allows assembling of different coupling mechanisms on the precision coaxial line.

3.1.12 Mated connector set
3.1.12.1 Hermaphroditic connectors

A pair of hermaphroditic connectors consists of two outer conductor connecting pieces, each

with interface, on which a coupling mechanism is mounted, and of two normally spring-loaded

centre contacts.
3.1.12.2 Flange connectors

The junction of two lengths of line connected together, consisting of one centre contact element

and two outer conductors with flanges.

3.1.12.3 Pin and socket connectors

Pin and socket connectors are an electrically and mechanically matched pair of connectors

containing the necessary outer conductors, centre conductors, dielectric supports and coupling

mechanisms. Any connector which will not mate with an identical connector shall be considered

a pin and socket connector.
3.1.13 Reflection coefficient

Where the term "reflection coefficient" is used in this recommendation, it refers to the

properties measured on assemblies of rigid lines, fed from and terminated with their nominal

impedance.
3.1.14 Power and voltage ratings

The power rating or voltage rating of a line and connectors is that value of transmitted power

or voltage which permits satisfactory operation of the line assembly and provides an adequate

safety factor below the point where injury or appreciably shortened life will occur, as specified

in the detail specification.
3.1.15 Electrical length
3.1.15.1 Electrical length of the coaxial line

The electrical length of the coaxial line is defined as the electrical length between the butt

contacts of the outer conductor of the line.
3.1.15.2 Electrical length of a mated pair of connectors

Thè electrical length of a mated pair of connectors is defined as the electrical length measured

between butting contacts of the outer conductor of the attached lines.

Note. — The mechanical and electrical reference planes will be indicated in the detail specification.

3.2 Definitions relating to testing procedures
3.2.1 Type

A type comprises products having similar design features, manufactured by the same techniques

and falling within the manufacturer's usual range of ratings for these products.

Notes 1. — Mounting accessories are ignored, provided they have no significant effect on the test results.

2. — Ratings cover the combination of:
electrical ratings;
b) sizes;
c) environmental group.

3. — The limits of the range of ratings shall be agreed upon between user and manufacturer.

3.2.2 Type tests

The type tests of a product are the complete series of tests to be carried out on a number of

specimens representative of the type, with the object of determining whether a particular manu-

facturer can be considered able to meet the detail specification.
