Overview

EN IEC 61169-74:2025 is a sectional specification for HN series RF coaxial connectors with screw coupling and characteristic impedance 50 Ω. Published by CLC and aligned with IEC 61169-74:2025, this document provides rules and templates for preparing Detail Specifications (DS) for HN connectors. It defines mating‑face dimensions for high performance connectors (grade 2), dimensional data for standard test connectors (grade 0), gauging information, and selected tests and inspection requirements - supporting connector use in microwave transmission systems up to 6 GHz.

Key topics and requirements

  • Detail Specification guidance: Instructions for preparing vendor- or product‑level Detail Specifications based on the sectional rules.
  • Mating face dimensions: Prescribed interfaces for grade 2 (high performance) connectors to ensure interchangeability and reliable mating.
  • Standard test connectors: Dimensional details for grade 0 test connectors used during qualification and measurement.
  • Gauging information: Gauge designs and acceptance criteria for centre and outer contacts to support mechanical conformance checks.
  • Test selection and schedules: Tests and inspection requirements drawn from IEC 61169-1, covering acceptance and periodic testing and quality assessment for assessment levels M and H.
  • Recommended performance characteristics: Parameters considered during DS development (electrical, mechanical and environmental ratings).
  • Operating range: Intended for RF systems operating up to 6 GHz; suitable for connection to RF cables and microstrips.

Applications and who uses it

EN IEC 61169-74:2025 is intended for:

  • Connector manufacturers preparing Detail Specifications and production test plans for HN series connectors.
  • Product designers and system engineers in telecommunications, broadcast, aerospace, military and microwave test equipment specifying reliable 50 Ω interfaces.
  • Test laboratories and QA teams performing dimensional gauging, electrical and environmental testing to defined acceptance and periodic schedules.
  • Procurement and compliance officers requiring standardized interface and performance requirements for supplier contracts.

Typical applications include microwave transmission links, RF test benches, cable assemblies and microstrip interconnects where a screw‑coupled 50 Ω HN connector is specified.

Related standards

  • IEC 61169-1 - Generic specification: general requirements and measuring methods (referenced for test methods).
  • IEC 62037-3 - Measurement of passive intermodulation in coaxial connectors.
  • IEC 62153-4-7 - EMC test method for transfer impedance and screening attenuation of connectors.

EN IEC 61169-74:2025 ensures mechanical interchangeability, consistent test methods and clear guidance for quality assessment of HN series RF coaxial connectors, helping manufacturers and users achieve reliable RF interconnections up to 6 GHz.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) IEC draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). IEC takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent rights in
respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, IEC had not received notice of (a) patent(s), which
may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that this may not represent
the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at https://patents.iec.ch. IEC
shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

The test procedure is as follows.
a) Sizing test
The gauge A shall be inserted into the socket-centre contact three times. This is a sizing
operation and should only be carried out when the socket-centre contact is removed from
the connector.
b) Insertion test
After sizing test, the standard gauge B should be inserted into the socket-centre contact.
The insertion depth should not be less than 6,35 mm and the insertion force should not be
more than 4,4 N.
c) Retention test
After sizing test, the gauge C shall be inserted into socket-centre contact. The contact shall
retain the mass of the gauge C in a vertical downward position. The insertion depth should
not be less than 6,35 mm and the separation force shall not be less than 0,56 N.
4.2.2 Gauge for outer contact of connector with pin centre contact
The gauge for the outer contact of connector with pin centre contact is shown in Figure 4 and
