Overview

EN 60335-2-29:2021/A11:2024 is a CENELEC amendment to the European safety standard EN 60335-2-29, which sets particular safety requirements for battery chargers used with household and similar electrical appliances. Prepared by CLC/TC 61, this amendment (A11) was approved in April 2024 and updates the normative Annex ZA on special national conditions. The document is relevant across CENELEC member countries and includes informative links to EU legislation (Annex ZZA).

Key topics and requirements

This amendment focuses on national conditions and specific requirements that affect the construction and safe use of battery chargers. Key technical aspects highlighted in the amendment include:

  • Supply cord and cable requirements: Addition of a Finnish national condition specifying that battery chargers for automobile use, when intended for outdoor charging or locations with outdoor-like temperatures, must be provided with supply cords and secondary conductors having mechanical and electrical properties at least equivalent to EN 50525-2-21:2011+AC:2013 (cable type H05RN-F).
  • National deviations / Annex ZA: A11 modifies Annex ZA (“Special national conditions”), documenting how national rules (here Finland) can impose stricter or specific requirements alongside the main EN 60335-2-29 text.
  • Standards integration: The amendment explicitly references EN 50525-2-21 (H05RN-F) as the baseline for acceptable cord/cable properties in the Finnish context.

Note: The amendment updates the standard’s administrative and normative scope rather than introducing new test methods or general technical specifications beyond the national requirement cited.

Applications and who uses this standard

EN 60335-2-29 and amendment A11 are used by stakeholders involved in the safety, design, testing, certification and regulation of battery chargers:

  • Manufacturers and design engineers - to ensure chargers (especially automotive/outdoor types) meet European safety and national cord/cable rules.
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessors - to verify compliance with EN 60335-2-29 and the A11 national conditions.
  • Regulators and procurement officers - to reference required safety attributes for products placed on national markets.
  • Technical compliance teams - to align product documentation and markings with CENELEC requirements and national deviations.
