Overview
EN IEC 60335-2-14:2023/A11:2023 is a CENELEC European amendment to the safety standard for household and similar electrical kitchen machines (rated voltage ≤ 250 V). This Amendment A11 (approved 2023‑11‑22) updates Part 2‑14 of the EN IEC 60335 series with additional and modified requirements that supplement EN IEC 60335-2-14:2023 and Part 1 (EN IEC 60335‑1). The amendment targets common hazards for appliances such as blenders, food processors, juicers, grinders and similar small kitchen appliances.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and user considerations
- Clarifies which appliances and user groups (children, very young users, vulnerable persons) are or are not covered for safe use without supervision.
- Marking and instructions
- New instruction requirements warning about unintended use and child safety.
- Lid/guard marking requirement for blenders, slicers and centrifugal juicers (symbol ISO 7000‑0790).
- Mechanical safety and stability
- Enhanced provisions for lid interlocks and guards: lids that comply with specific test specs or require two separate movements to open are accepted; lids must prevent accidental operation.
- Specific tests and exclusions for test probes (probe dimensions and where probes are not applied to certain appliances or feed openings).
- Blender jar dimensions and clearances: examples include maximum jar opening cross-section (125 mm) and minimum distance from upper jar edge to blade edge (125 mm).
- Operational control requirements
- Actuator protection: recessed/guarded actuating members; actuator test with a 40 mm diameter rod at ≤5 N or 0.2 N·m torque for rotating types.
- Two-step start logic where single-action start would be unsafe, with timing rules for reactivation (e.g., 30 s, 10 s thresholds).
- Heating and temperature limits
- Continuous temperature-rise monitoring during tests; Table Z101 sets maximum temperature rises for external enclosures (e.g., bare metal 45 K, coated metal 55 K, glass/ceramic 60 K, plastic >0.3 mm 65 K).
- Mechanical strength and drop tests
- Hand-held appliances undergo drop tests from 700 mm onto hardwood; appliances must retain compliance with Clauses 8 and 29 after three drops.
Applications and who uses it
- Appliance manufacturers (design & compliance teams): to design safe kitchen machines and ensure CE marking readiness.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies: to perform conformity tests and apply amendment A11 test specifications.
- Product safety engineers and R&D: to implement lid interlocks, control logic and temperature/ mechanical safeguards.
- Regulators and standards committees: to align national rules and withdraw conflicting standards per CENELEC timelines.
