Overview
EN IEC 60332-3-22:2018 (CLC) specifies a Category A test method for assessing vertical flame spread of vertically-mounted bunched wires or cables, including electric and optical fibre cables, under defined conditions. This edition (a technical revision and RLV/redline version of IEC 60332-3-22:2018) replaces the 2000 edition and Amendment 1:2008 and has clarified mounting and applicability to optical-fibre constructions. The test is intended primarily for type approval testing and is a group safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104.
Key topics and requirements
- Test scope: Category A method for vertically-mounted bunched cables (electrical and optical).
- Test sample volume: Cables installed on the test ladder to achieve a nominal total volume of 7 l/m of non-metallic material.
- Flame application: Continuous flame application for 40 minutes.
- Mounting method: Samples mounted on the front of the ladder; use a standard ladder for conductor cross-sections ≤ 35 mm² (and optical cables), and a standard or wide ladder for cables with at least one conductor > 35 mm² depending on the number of test pieces.
- Configuration: Cables with conductors > 35 mm² are tested spaced; cables ≤ 35 mm² and optical fibre cables are tested touching (arrays in contact). Mounting details are more strictly defined in this edition to improve repeatability and reproducibility.
- Evaluation: Flame spread is quantified as the extent of damage to the cable sample; the method demonstrates a cable’s ability to limit flame spread.
- Annexes: Annex A gives requirements and guidance on cable selection for type approval; Annex B provides recommended performance requirements.
- Test report and retest: The standard defines reporting, retest procedures and required apparatus references.
Practical applications
- Demonstrating compliance for type approval, product certification and regulatory submissions.

INTRODUCTION
IEC 60332-3-22 is part of a series of publications dealing with tests on electric and optical
fibre cables under fire conditions.
The IEC 60332-1 and IEC 60332-2 series specify methods of test for flame spread
characteristics for a single vertical insulated wire or cable. It cannot be assumed that,
because a cable or wire meets the requirements of the IEC 60332-1 and IEC 60332-2 series,
a vertical bunch of similar cables or wires will behave in a similar manner. This is because
flame spread along a vertical bunch of cables depends on a number of features, such as
a) the volume of combustible material exposed to the fire and to any flame which may be
produced by the combustion of the cables;
b) the geometrical configuration of the cables and their relationship to an enclosure;
c) the temperature at which it is possible to ignite the gases emitted from the cables;
d) the quantity of combustible gas released from the cables for a given temperature rise;
e) the volume of air passing through the cable installation;
f) the co

The standard EN IEC 60332-3-22:2018 presents a comprehensive framework for evaluating the vertical flame spread of vertically mounted bunched wires and cables, including both electrical and optical fibre varieties. This document stands out due to its stringent testing methods outlined for Category A, focusing specifically on configurations where high volumes of non-metallic materials are present, which is critical for environments where fire safety is paramount. One of the notable strengths of this standard is its detailed testing conditions, which ensure that the assessments conducted under this standard are both rigorous and replicable. The specified nominal total volume of non-metallic material at 7 l/m provides a consistent reference point for the testing of cable samples, an essential aspect for ensuring the uniformity of test results. Furthermore, the clear guidelines on flame application time, set at 40 minutes, offer a controlled environment that enhances the reliability of the evaluation process. The improvements made from the previous edition of the standard, including a focused emphasis on optical fibre cables alongside traditional metallic conductor types, reinforce its relevance in today's increasingly diverse cable applications. The standard's enhanced definitions regarding cable mounting techniques not only improve the precision of the tests but also support better repeatability and reproducibility, thus benefiting manufacturers striving to meet safety regulations. Additionally, the provisions for type approval testing and the essential requirements for cable selection provided in Annex A underpin the standard's practical application in various scenarios. This facilitates manufacturers’ compliance with regulatory frameworks and enables effective risk assessment in fire safety. Conclusively, the EN IEC 60332-3-22:2018 standard is a vital tool for ensuring fire safety in cable installations, reinforcing the importance of stringent testing methods in the prevention of fire hazards associated with poorly performing cables. Its comprehensive approach and updates demonstrate a relevant evolution of priorities in fire safety standards, making it not only a critical resource for manufacturers but also for end-users aiming for high safety standards in practical applications.
