Overview
EN IEC 60335-2-4:2023/A11:2023 is a CLC (CENELEC) European amendment that updates the safety requirements for household and similar electrical spin extractors (centrifuges). It covers stand‑alone electric spin extractors and pin extractors incorporated in washing machines with separate washing and spin containers, intended for household use with a capacity up to 10 kg dry cloth and drum peripheral speed ≤ 50 m/s. Rated voltages covered are ≤ 250 V for single‑phase appliances and ≤ 480 V for other appliances. This amendment (A11) modifies EN IEC 60335-2-4:2023 and was approved in August 2023.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & exclusions
- Applies to foreseeable hazards for typical users; generally does not cover unsupervised use by very young children.
- Excludes launderette machines (see EN 50569), exclusively industrial units, and appliances for special locations (corrosive/explosive atmospheres).
- Marking & instructions
- Terminology updated to reference “lid or door” throughout marking and instructions clauses.
- Interlocks & endurance
- Lid/door interlocks must withstand normal use; endurance test requires 6 000 opening/closing cycles (3 000 energized, 3 000 unpowered) with specified opening/closing speeds and force multipliers.
- It shall only be possible to energize the drum when the lid or door is closed and locked.
- Safety while drum is moving
- It must be impossible to open the lid/door while the drum is in motion. Tests include application of fault conditions and electromagnetic disturbance tests when electronic circuits are relied upon.
- For programmable electronic controls, software must address specified fault/error conditions and be evaluated per Annex R.
- Mechanical strength
- Lids/doors are subject to impact testing (rubber hemisphere, 70 mm diameter, 40–50 IRHD, 20 kg mass dropped from 100 mm, three repetitions) with no damage permitting access to moving parts.
- Moisture & stability
- Amendments adjust moisture‑related clauses and require a tilt test (2°) for appliances with working surfaces.
- Normative references
- Adds IEC/EN IEC 60730-2-12 (electrically operated door locks) as a normative reference.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Manufacturers of household spin extractors and washing machines (design and compliance teams)
- Product safety engineers and R&D for appliance durability and safety features
