Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-31: Particular requirements for range hoods and other cooking fume extractors

IEC 60335-2-31:2012 deals with the safety of electric range hoods and other cooking fume extractors intended for installing above, beside, behind or under household cooking ranges, hobs and similar cooking appliances, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V. The cooking appliance can be supplied by electricity or other fuels, such as gas. Appliances not intended for normal household use but that nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard. As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general, it does not take into account persons (including children) whose physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction or children playing with the appliance. This fifth edition cancels and replaces the fourth edition published in 2002, including its Amendment 1 (2006) and its Amendment 2 (2008). The principal changes in this edition as compared with the fourth edition of IEC 60335-2-31 are as follows: - added requirements to address range hood installation (7.12.1 and 22.103); - added construction requirement to address risk of entrapment in rangehoods or down-draft system (20.101); - deleted reference to ISO 13732-1 from Bibliography. The attention of National Committees is drawn to the fact that equipment manufacturers and testing organizations may need a transitional period following publication of a new, amended or revised IEC publication in which to make products in accordance with the new requirements and to equip themselves for conducting new or revised tests. It is the recommendation of the committee that the content of this publication be adopted for implementation nationally not earlier than 12 months or later than 36 months from the date of publication. Overview

EN 60335-2-31:2014 (CLC adoption of IEC 60335-2-31:2012) is the European safety standard for range hoods and other cooking fume extractors intended for installation above, beside, behind or under household cooking ranges and hobs. It applies to appliances with rated voltages up to 250 V and covers household and similar appliances (including those used by laypeople in shops, light industry and farms). This fifth edition replaces the 2003 edition and its amendments and includes new requirements for installation, construction and entrapment risk.

Key topics and technical requirements

The standard is Part 2 of the IEC/EN 60335 series and supplements EN 60335-1. Major technical areas addressed include:

  • Scope & definitions - coverage of household and similar environments and user considerations (exclusions for very young children and certain vulnerable users).
  • Marking and instructions - mandatory information for safe use, including lamp types and ILCOS codes (EN 61231) and device distinguishability.
  • Installation requirements - added clauses to address correct range hood installation (notably clauses 7.12.1 and 22.103).
  • Mechanical safety - stability, mechanical strength, risk of entrapment (new construction requirement 20.101) and moving-part hazards.
  • Electrical safety - protection against access to live parts, leakage current, dielectric strength, transient overvoltages, earthing and wiring practices.
  • Thermal & fire resistance - heating tests, resistance to heat and fire and requirements to limit ignition or burning.
  • Environmental & durability tests - moisture resistance, endurance and corrosion (resistance to rusting).
  • Construction & components - clearances, creepage distances, components, terminals and cord provisions.
  • Testing & conformity - test conditions, performance verification and guidance for conformity assessment and national implementation timelines.

Practical applications and users

Who uses EN 60335-2-31:2014 and why:

  • Manufacturers and product designers - to design compliant range hoods and down-draft systems that meet EU safety expectations.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies - for type testing, conformity assessment and issuing CE-related attestations.
  • Compliance engineers and technical authors - to prepare manuals, marking and safe installation instructions.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.

The article discusses the safety requirements outlined in the EN 60335-2-31:2014 standard for household range hoods and other cooking fume extractors. The standard applies to electric range hoods and extractors that are intended to be installed above, beside, behind, or under household cooking appliances. It covers appliances with a rated voltage of up to 250 V that are powered by electricity or other fuels like gas. The standard also includes appliances that are not specifically designed for household use but could still pose a danger to the public, such as those used in shops, light industry, and farms. The standard addresses common hazards related to these appliances that are encountered by individuals in and around their homes. However, it does not take into account individuals with physical or mental limitations, lack of experience and knowledge, or children who may require supervision or instruction when using the appliance. This fifth edition replaces the previous edition published in 2002 and includes updated requirements for range hood installation, addressing the risk of entrapment, and the removal of a reference to ISO 13732-1 from the bibliography. Manufacturers and testing organizations may require a transitional period to comply with the new requirements and conduct revised tests following the publication of this standard. The article recommends that national committees adopt the content of this publication for implementation within 12 to 36 months from the date of its publication. The keywords associated with this article are Cooking, Range hood, and Fume Extractors.
