General Information
Relations
Overview
EN 61000-4-34:2007/A1:2009 is a European standard under the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) framework, specifically addressing testing and measurement techniques related to voltage dips, short interruptions, and voltage variations immunity. This standard is applicable to electrical and electronic equipment with a rated mains current exceeding 16 A per phase. It provides detailed methodologies for assessing equipment performance and immunity against common low-frequency power disturbances in both residential and industrial settings.
The amendment A1 of 2009 integrates important corrigenda to the original 2007 version, ensuring harmonized testing procedures and updated parameters for accurate EMC evaluation. The standard covers equipment operating on 50 Hz or 60 Hz alternating current, including single-phase and three-phase mains systems.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
- Applies to equipment with mains input current above 16 A per phase
- Addresses voltage dips, short interruptions, and voltage variations in AC supply systems
- Covers both 50 Hz and 60 Hz frequency operations, including residential and industrial machinery
Testing Procedures
- Defines test levels for voltage dips and interruptions based on rated equipment voltage (UT)
- Tests are categorized into classes aligned with IEC 61000-2-4 for severity and duration
- Simultaneous voltage variation testing on all three phases in three-phase systems
- Specifies generator performance criteria, including voltage output stability, peak current capability, rise/fall times, and phase angle control for simulation of power disturbances
Generator and Equipment Interaction
- Emphasizes test generator current drive capability for polyphase loads during dips
- Allows high-impedance open circuit generation for interruptions
- Clarifies the phase relationship between voltage dips, interruptions, and power frequency
Large Current Equipment Considerations
- Annex E provides guidance on immunity testing methods for equipment with very large mains currents (above 75 A and up to over 200 A)
- Suggests modular testing approaches for separating equipment into manageable units
- Recommends combining laboratory testing with engineering simulations where full-scale testing is impractical
- Discusses special considerations like increased currents during dips on non-dipped phases and post-dip current surges
- Highlights the importance of evaluating safety function responses and sensor behavior during voltage disturbances
Updated Annexes and Figures
- Inclusion of new annex providing detailed advice for testing large equipment
- Revised test generator specifications and dip vector representations for accurate measurement simulation
- Updated recommended test levels and durations in alignment with practical realities of power disturbances
Applications
Industrial Machinery Testing Ensures that high-current industrial equipment can tolerate real-world voltage irregularities without malfunction or damage, supporting operational continuity in factories and plants.
Residential and Commercial Equipment Evaluation Validates equipment designed for mains currents exceeding 16 A, such as large appliances and HVAC systems, to maintain reliability despite supply voltage dips and interruptions.
EMC Compliance and Certification Used by manufacturers and testing laboratories to verify compliance with European EMC directives and to meet national safety regulations concerning immunity to power quality disturbances.
Design and Development Assists engineers in designing robust electrical and electronic products that meet immunity requirements, reducing product failure risks under voltage variation conditions.
Power Quality Assessment Provides a standardized framework for evaluating the susceptibly of equipment to voltage dips, enabling improved power system reliability and facilitating utility and grid operator coordination.
Related Standards
IEC 61000-4-11 Covers immunity testing for electrical and electronic equipment with rated mains current up to 16 A per phase, complementing EN 61000-4-34 for lower current ratings.
IEC 61000-2-4 Provides classification of power quality phenomena including voltage dips and interruptions, referenced in EN 61000-4-34 for defining test severity classes.
IEC 61000-4-30 Describes measurement techniques for power quality parameters, providing methods for accurate monitoring of voltage dips and variations during immunity testing.
National Safety Regulations Some countries impose upper-rated current limits for equipment, typically between 75 A and 250 A, affecting testing requirements and compliance paths relating to EN 61000-4-34.
