5.3 Spray flow rate
5.3.1 Setup
Instruments shall be placed so as to capture all the water emitted from the nozzle tip, as shown
in Figure 6. Prepare the scales to measure the weight of the water, the beaker to collect the
water, and the timer to measure the spray time.
Figure 6 – Measurement of flow rate
5.3.2 Measurement method
Measure flow rate with unheated water.
Measurement results shall be recorded in ml/min. Water volume shall be measured as mass in
g and converted into ml and recorded (1 g = 1 ml).
If there are multiple spray modes (rear spray, front spray etc.), the spray flowrate shall be
measured with each mode. Other spray features (oscillating spray function, pulsating spray
function, etc.) shall be disregarded.
The flow rates shall be measured at the maximum and minimum spray pressure settings.
To eliminate measuring tolerance due to transient characteristics immediately after the start of
spray, the first 5 s of spray shall be disregarded.
NOTE For example, the beaker used to collect water is placed in position once the first 5 s have elapsed.
The measurement shall be conducted three times for 1 min during the spray.
If the spray seat is not capable of spraying for 1 min, the outcome can be obtained by
converting the longest possible duration to a 1 min spraying duration.
5.3.3 Results
The results of the three measurements are averaged.
Each flow rate measurement in ml/min shall be indicated with the operation mode (rear spray,
front spray, etc.) and pressure (maximum and minimum).

5.4 Spray area
5.4.1 Setup
For the measurement of the spray area, a perforated plate filled with test media is used to
simulate the excrement on the human body.
The perforated plates shall be made of acrylic that provides a good contrast with the test media
prepared in accordance with Annex A.
The perforated plate shall have outer dimensions of 60 mm × 70 mm and a thickness of 2 mm.
The small holes of the perforated plate shall be 1 mm in diameter. The holes shall cover a
36 mm × 59,4 mm area, and the distance between the centres of the holes shall be 0,9 mm, as
shown in Figure 7.
Dimensions in millimetres
Figure 7 – Perforated plate for spray area measurement
The perforated plate filled with test media prepared in accordance with Annex A shall be
positioned to be hit at the spray receiving point.
An example of the jig, as shown in Figure 8, is prepared, installed and adjusted as follows:
1) Prepare a transparent acrylic plate with the same outer dimensions as the perforated plate.
IEC 62947:2022 © IEC 2022 – 17 –
2) Before placing the jig, adjust the angle of the frame used for holding the perforated plate so
that the angle with reference to the horizontal plane is equal to 90°minus the rated spray
angle, and secure the frame.
3) Place a levelling gauge on the upper surface of the toilet bowl and adjust the inclination of
the toilet bowl so that the right and left directions of the toilet bowl are horizontal.
4) Installing the test jig, the right and left rods of the jig shall be parallel to the levelling gauge.
Thereafter, the jig is temporarily fixed by the three stoppers located inside the toilet bowl
opening and one stopper located outside the front of the toilet bowl.
5) Place the acrylic test plate onto the frame of the jig and secure it.
6) Start the spray operation, observe the emitted spray and adjust the jig so that the spray can
touch the centre of the test plate. Then the acrylic test plate is removed from the frame and
the perforated plate shall be set as shown in Figure 9. The centre of the test plate shall be
at the spray receiving point where the centre of the spray crosses the horizontal plane of
toilet bowl rim with the nozzle in its middle position; if there are two middle positions, select
the position at which the nozzle protrudes by more than half its travel.
7) After centring is completed, fix the jig position completely while making fine adjustments
with the stopper and the screw so that the jig remains horizontal.
8) After fixing, check again to confirm that the spray touches the centre of the test plate and
that the jig does not move horizontally.
9) Remove the perforated plate from the jig and the jig is ready for the test. When a perforated
plated filled with test media is placed, the test may be started.
10) When the test is completed, the perforated plate should be removed and washed with tap
water thoroughly to remove any residues. Then dry it with pressurized air.
Considering that the degree of dryness of the perforated plate will influence the test results, the
results of the first test using each perforated plate shall be ignored.
Figure 8 – Jig example
For preparation of the perforated plates filled with the test media, refer to Annex C.
To prevent drying of the test media, the test should be performed within 5 min after the test
media has been completely filled into the perforated plate.
