Overview

EN 60335-2-2:2010/A1:2013 is a European standard under the CLC framework focusing on safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, specifically vacuum cleaners and water-suction cleaning appliances. This amendment to the original EN 60335-2-2:2010 was approved by CENELEC in December 2012 and published in March 2013. It aligns with the IEC 60335-2-2:2009/A1:2012 international standard, ensuring harmonized safety practices across European markets.

The standard addresses electrical safety, operational reliability, and protection mechanisms to minimize risks associated with the use of vacuum cleaners and water-suction devices at home or in similar environments. It supports compliance with the Low Voltage Directive (LVD 2006/95/EC), contributing to consumer protection and product conformity.

Key Topics

  • Safety Requirements for Vacuum Cleaners and Water-Suction Appliances
The standard specifies essential safety measures tailored for these appliances, covering aspects such as electrical insulation, mechanical stability, and protection against electric shock.

  • Protection Against Electrical and Mechanical Hazards
Requirements include safeguards like devices to prevent appliances from dropping off elevated surfaces, automatic stopping or reversing functions when edges (e.g., stairs) are detected, and compliance with electromagnetic compatibility testing.

  • Incorporation of Electronic Circuits and Software Evaluation
For appliances controlled by programmable electronic circuits, the standard mandates fault/error detection before operation, and software and hardware safety initialization and termination checks to prevent hazardous conditions.

  • Testing and Compliance Verification
Compliance checks involve inspection, functional testing under various fault scenarios, electromagnetic interference tests, and software validation based on specified tables and annexes (notably Annex R for software evaluation).

  • Amendment Highlights
This 2013 amendment introduces updated definitions, enhanced requirements for mobile parts with edge detection and response mechanisms, and normative annexes related to software risk control.

Applications

  • Manufacturers of Vacuum Cleaners and Water-Suction Cleaning Devices
Ensuring their products meet the updated safety requirements before market release in the European Economic Area.

  • Product Testing and Certification Bodies
Offering conformity assessments, including electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and software reliability in line with the amendment.

  • Regulatory Compliance and Market Access
Supporting manufacturers to fulfill legal obligations under the Low Voltage Directive and facilitate smooth product entry into EU markets.

  • Design and Development Teams
Integrating safety features and fault tolerance in embedded software and electronic control systems to avoid failures during operation.

Related Standards

  • EN 60335-1: General Safety Requirements for Household Appliances
Provides the overarching safety framework applied together with particular parts like EN 60335-2-2.

  • IEC 60335-2-2:2009/A1:2012
The corresponding international standard offering harmonized global requirements for vacuum and water-suction cleaning appliances.

  • Low Voltage Directive (LVD) 2006/95/EC
Ensures electrical equipment within certain voltage limits meets essential safety objectives.

  • EN 60335-2 series
Covers safety aspects for various other household electrical appliances such as kitchen machines, ironing machines, and fans, complementing the standards for vacuum cleaners.

By adhering to EN 60335-2-2:2010/A1:2013, manufacturers and stakeholders ensure enhanced safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance of vacuum cleaners and water-suction cleaning appliances, fostering consumer confidence and product excellence in the European and international markets.
