Overview
EN IEC 61784-1:2019 - Industrial communication networks - Profiles - Part 1: Fieldbus profiles - defines protocol-specific communication profiles for fieldbus systems used in factory manufacturing and process control. Based primarily on the IEC 61158 series, this fifth edition (2019) replaces the 2014 edition and updates dated references across the IEC 61158 suite and related profile documents, and revises selection tables for CPF 2, CPF 4 and CPF 8. The standard provides a framework for designers and vendors to ensure interoperable fieldbus device implementations and conformance to recognized profiles.
Key topics and requirements
- Profile definitions: Protocol-specific communication profiles that map physical, data-link and application layer specifications (as specified in IEC 61158 parts) into usable fieldbus profiles.
- Conformance rules: Requirements and guidance for demonstrating conformance of devices and implementations to a given communication profile.
- Layer coverage: Reference to physical layer, data-link layer and application layer services and protocols - enabling consistent device design and integration.
- Communication Profile Families (CPF): Organization of fieldbus types into CPFs (for example, CPF 1 includes FOUNDATION™ fieldbus) with selection tables that list supported types and options. The 2019 edition updates CPF selection tables for CPF 2, 4 and 8.
- Normative references: Integrates many IEC documents (for example, multiple parts of IEC 61158, IEC 61784-2, IEC 61784-5 series and IEC 61918) which are normative for profile implementation and installation.
- Terminology and conventions: Standardized terms, definitions, abbreviations and conventions to reduce ambiguity across manufacturers and projects.
Applications and who uses it
EN IEC 61784-1:2019 is directly applicable to:
- Device manufacturers designing fieldbus-enabled sensors, actuators, I/O modules, PLCs and controllers.
- System integrators and automation engineers who select and commission fieldbus networks in factory manufacturing and process control environments.
- Control system architects specifying protocols and interoperability requirements for industrial networks.
- Test labs and certification bodies assessing conformance to fieldbus profiles.
- Procurement and compliance teams requiring clear profile mappings and standards-based interoperability guarantees.
Practical benefits include improved interoperability, clearer device specifications, simplified integration across multi-vendor systems, and alignment with up-to-date IEC fieldbus protocol definitions.
