Overview
The EN IEC 61784-5-21:2018/A1:2024 is a vital European standard published by CLC that addresses the installation profiles for fieldbuses within industrial communication networks. This document serves as an amendment to the 2018 edition and introduces significant updates for the installation of process control fieldbuses categorized under CPF 21. It complements and should be used alongside IEC 61918:2018 and its amendments (A1:2022 and A2:2024), ensuring consistent practices for industrial network installations.
This standard supports the efficient and reliable deployment of industrial fieldbus networks, which are crucial for process measurement and control in automated environments. By specifying detailed network installation profiles, including cable categories, data rates, connection limits, and hardware requirements, it offers practical guidelines for fieldbus installers, system integrators, and automation engineers.
Key Topics
Installation Profiles for CPF 21: EN IEC 61784-5-21:2018/A1:2024 defines installation profiles tailored to the Communication Profile Family 21 (CPF 21), addressing balanced Ethernet cabling and optical fibre cabling parameters.
Supported Data Rates and Cabling Requirements:
- Balanced cabling now includes 100 Mbps and 1,000 Mbps data rates, with addition of Category 5e as a minimum cable category per ISO/IEC 11801-3.
- Detailed specifications for patch cord length, maximum channel length, and number of connections support design optimization.
Optical Fibre Updates:
- Revision of single mode silica characteristics to a bandwidth of 120 MHz and wavelength of 1500 nm.
- Increased maximum channel insertion loss/optical power budget to 10.5 dB enhances flexibility in fibre installations.
Normative References: Updated to incorporate the latest editions and amendments of IEC 61918, ensuring harmonized industrial communication network installation standards.
Compliance and Conformance: Clear guidance on how to demonstrate adherence to this amendment combined with the original 2018 document, relevant for certification and quality assurance purposes.
Applications
Industrial Process Control Networks:
The standard is applied in the design, installation, and commissioning of fieldbus systems for measuring and controlling industrial processes including manufacturing plants, chemical processing, and utilities.Automation and Control Systems:
Ensures reliable communication infrastructure for programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control systems (DCS), and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) setups.Ethernet and Optical Fieldbus Installations:
Provides guidance on cabling infrastructure using copper twisted-pair and fiber optic mediums, enabling high-speed, long-distance, and robust communication links in harsh industrial environments.Network Upgrade and Maintenance:
Assists engineers in upgrading existing industrial fieldbus networks to current best practices and maintaining network performance by adhering to standardized installation criteria.
Related Standards
IEC 61784 Series: Covers profiles for industrial communication networks including fieldbus protocols, essential to understanding complete industrial communication setups.
IEC 61918:2018 and Amendments: Specifies the general installation requirements of communication networks in industrial premises, serving as the foundational document to which EN IEC 61784-5-21:2018/A1:2024 is closely related.
ISO/IEC 11801-3: Provides guidance on cabling categories and classes, referenced for cable selection and performance classification.
IEC 60793-2-50: Pertains to optical fibre specifications referenced in the amendment for cable types and performance parameters.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publicat
