Overview
The EN IEC 61340-6-1:2018/A1:2024 standard provides updated technical requirements and guidelines for electrostatic control in healthcare, commercial, and public facilities, with a specific focus on healthcare environments. This amendment refines and expands upon the original 2018 edition to better address the unique challenges of managing electrostatic discharge (ESD) risks in critical healthcare settings.
Published and approved by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) in 2024, this standard aligns with international best practices for minimizing potential hazards posed by electrostatics, particularly where sensitive medical equipment and vulnerable patients are involved. EN IEC 61340-6-1:2018/A1 is scheduled for national adoption by November 2025 across CENELEC member states, ensuring wide applicability throughout Europe.
Key Topics
Electrostatic Control in Healthcare Facilities:
The standard sets practical measures to mitigate electrostatic hazards in different types of healthcare locations, such as operating theatres, intensive care units, diagnostic rooms, and treatment areas.Classification of Healthcare Areas by Electrostatic Risk Groups:
- Unclassified – Minimal control recommended
- Group 0 (G0) – Electrostatic control recommended (e.g., massage therapy rooms)
- Group 1 (G1) – Electrostatic control conditionally required based on humidity and charging evidence (e.g., delivery rooms, ECG/EEG rooms)
- Group 2 (G2) – Electrostatic control strictly required for high-risk areas such as anesthetic and operating rooms
Electrostatic Control Methods:
- Grounding of personnel through footwear and conductive flooring
- Use of conductive or dissipative materials for floors, furniture, bedding, and textiles
- Application of low-charging materials and packaging
- Environmental controls to maintain humidity levels above 30% RH where possible
Material Selection and Testing:
The amendment emphasizes careful selection of materials that comply with specific healthcare electrostatic performance requirements. It advises adherence to this standard in cases where product specifications reference other electrostatic standards that may not align with healthcare needs.Updated Terminology and Definitions:
Shifting terminology from "static control" to "electrostatic control" throughout the document strengthens focus on precise control measures suited for healthcare environments.Safety Precautions for High-Risk Situations:
For areas involving flammable anesthetics or hyperbaric oxygen, more stringent resistance to ground requirements (≤1 × 10^6 Ω) are mandated, alongside practices to minimize rapid movements that generate static charges.
Applications
The EN IEC 61340-6-1:2018/A1:2024 standard is essential for designing, operating, and maintaining healthcare facilities with a goal to:
- Protect sensitive medical electronic equipment from damage or malfunction caused by electrostatic discharge
- Safeguard patient health by reducing risks of sparks or ignition in flammable environments
- Ensure compliance with international and European safety regulations in hospitals and clinics
- Guide architects, engineers, facility managers, and healthcare providers in implementing effective electrostatic control measures
- Inform procurement decisions related to flooring, footwear, textiles, and packaging used within healthcare settings
The practical impact of this standard extends to commercial and public facilities hosting healthcare functions, recommending a coordinated approach to electrostatic risk management.

AMENDMENT 1
FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by ind
