Overview

EN 60836:2015 (IEC 60836:2015) specifies requirements and test methods for unused silicone insulating liquids intended for transformers and other electrotechnical equipment. The standard defines characteristics, sampling, storage and delivery requirements, and minimum performance criteria for silicone transformer liquids (classified e.g. L-NTUK-8360300 per IEC 61039) and for other silicone liquids used in cable accessories, capacitors, electrical magnets, etc. This edition updates liquid classification to IEC 61039:2008, removes references to withdrawn IEC 61100, and adds minimum requirements for other silicone electrotechnical liquids.

Key topics and requirements

EN 60836:2015 covers both general and test-specific requirements, including:

  • Properties and test methods: colour and appearance, density, kinematic viscosity, flash point, fire point, refractive index, pour point, water content, acidity, breakdown voltage, dielectric dissipation factor (tan δ), permittivity, d.c. resistivity, gassing under electrical stress and ionization, and flammability.
  • Sampling and storage: methods for sampling unused liquids and guidance on storage and maintenance prior to use.
  • Health, safety and environment (HSE): handling and disposal recommendations for silicone insulating liquids.
  • Individual specifications: detailed specification table for silicone transformer liquid and a table of minimum requirements for other silicone liquids for electrotechnical purposes.
  • Normative references: integrates methods from IEC and ISO standards (for example IEC 60156, IEC 60247, IEC 60475, IEC 60944 and several ISO test methods).

Practical applications

This standard is used to ensure that silicone insulating liquids:

  • Meet electrical safety and dielectric performance required for transformer insulation systems.
  • Are fit for use in other electrotechnical applications such as cable accessories, capacitors and electromagnetic devices.
  • Can be consistently tested, sampled and certified using internationally harmonized methods.

Practical benefits:

  • Reliable selection and procurement specifications for component manufacturers and utilities.
  • Consistent test regimes for quality control and acceptance testing.
  • Guidance for storage, handling and environmental compliance.

Who should use this standard

  • Transformer and switchgear manufacturers
  • Utilities and power distribution companies
  • Test laboratories and quality assurance teams
  • Cable accessory and capacitor manufacturers
  • Procurement, safety and environmental compliance officers

Related standards

EN 60836 references and aligns with several IEC/ISO documents used for test methods and classification, notably:

  • IEC 60156, IEC 60247, IEC 60475, IEC 60944, IEC 61039 and relevant ISO methods for flash point, viscosity and density.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
