Overview

EN 50419:2022 is a European standard issued by CLC that establishes requirements for the marking of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) concerning the separate collection of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The standard supports environmental policies aimed at reducing unsorted WEEE disposal by facilitating its identification and separate collection. It aligns with Directive 2012/19/EU (WEEE, recast) and supersedes the previous EN 50419:2006, offering an updated framework for marking EEE to promote responsible recycling and recovery.

Key elements of EN 50419:2022 include unique producer identification, marking of manufacturing or market introduction dates, and clear symbols indicating that equipment is subject to separate WEEE collection. These markings help stakeholders-producers, treatment facilities, waste managers, and consumers-effectively manage WEEE streams to comply with European regulations.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability
EN 50419:2022 applies to electrical and electronic equipment placed on the market after 13 August 2005 that falls within WEEE collection categories. It excludes technical carrier media like barcodes or microchips used for producer identification.

  • Unique Producer Identification
The standard mandates that each EEE must display a unique producer identifier, such as a brand name, trademark, or company registration number. This identification is linked to national producer registers, facilitating traceability and responsibility.

  • Date Identification
EEE must be marked with the date of manufacture or the date it was placed on the market, following ISO 8601 formats or approved codes. This is critical for financial differentiation and treatment of WEEE according to its age and regulatory requirements.

  • Crossed-Out Wheeled Bin Symbol
A central marking requirement is the use of the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol, which indicates that the equipment should not be disposed of as unsorted municipal waste but collected separately. The standard defines exact dimensions, design, and placement regulations for this symbol.

  • Integrated and Separate Markings
The standard describes options for integrated markings combining the symbol with a black bar (indicating the manufacturing date category) or separate markings where date and symbol are distinct but compliant with size and visibility requirements.

  • Marking Durability and Visibility
Markings must be visible, legible, and indelible under typical product use conditions. Durability tests include resistance to rubbing with water and petroleum spirit to ensure markings remain intact.

  • Location and Accessibility
Markings should be placed such that they remain visible-even if under a cover removable without tools-unless safety standards dictate otherwise. If space constraints inhibit marking on the device itself, markings must appear on packaging, user instructions, and warranties.

Applications

  • Product Compliance
Manufacturers and producers of electrical and electronic equipment use EN 50419:2022 to ensure their products are marked in compliance with WEEE regulations, enabling easier identification for end-of-life collection.

  • Waste Management and Recycling
Markings guided by EN 50419 facilitate sorting and separate collection at municipal and industrial waste facilities, improving recycling rates and reducing environmental pollution from hazardous substances in WEEE.

  • Regulatory Monitoring
Enforcement bodies rely on these standardized markings to verify producer responsibilities and compliance with WEEE directives, streamlining oversight and data collection.

  • Consumer Awareness
Clear visual markings on products and packaging inform consumers that the equipment should not be discarded with regular waste, promoting responsible disposal behaviors.
