Overview
EN IEC 60335-2-80:2024/A11:2024 is a European amendment (A11) to the household and similar electrical appliances safety standard specifically addressing particular requirements for fans. It covers electric fans for household, similar and commercial purposes with rated voltages up to 250 V for single‑phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances. This amendment updates scope, definitions, construction, marking, mechanical strength and acoustic emission requirements, and integrates additional rules for commercial use (Annex ZE) and noise emission testing (Annex ZAA). It was approved by CENELEC in 2024 and supplements EN IEC 60335-2-80:2024 and Part 1 (EN IEC 60335-1).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope expansion: Clarifies inclusion of household, commercial and battery‑operated appliances (dual‑supply devices are battery‑treated in battery mode). Partition fans, duct fans and built‑in ventilation fans are explicitly addressed.
- Definitions: New/updated terms such as partition fan, duct fan, and safety suspension system device to reflect installation and maintenance hazards.
- Marking & instructions: Fans for tropical climates must be marked with “T”. Instructions must declare commercial‑use designations and noise information per Annex ZAA.
- Mechanical strength & guards: Fan guards are tested with 20 N push/pull forces; a probe similar to EN 61032 test probe B (50 mm circular stop face) is used to verify guarding under a max 5 N application. Guard interlocks are endurance tested (e.g., 5 000 cycles at 5 cycles/min for some interlocks).
- Construction & figures: Updates to required safety devices (electrical safety device to disconnect before bolt failure; mechanical safety suspension descriptions for ceiling fans) and removal/marking of some figures as not applicable.
- Abnormal operation & stability: Modifications to clauses on abnormal operation, stability and mechanical hazards for various fan types.
- Acoustical noise (Annex ZAA): Standardized methods to determine A‑weighted emission sound pressure and sound power levels; declarations required when A‑weighted emission sound pressure exceeds 70 dB(A) (or warning and protective measures when exceeding 80 dB(A)). Related ISO/EN acoustics standards are referenced.
Applications
- Ensures safe design, testing and documentation of fans used in:
- Homes, dwellings and associated buildings
- Offices, shops, hotels and similar non‑industrial environments
- Commercial environments (with additional Annex ZE requirements)
- Built‑in ventilation and partition installations
- Used for compliance assessment, product development, type testing, user instructions and CE/market conformity.
Who should use this standard

22.ZE.6
Replace the second paragraph starting with “The guard is opened …” of the compliance criteria with:
The guard is opened to the extent needed to cause the interlocking to operate and is then closed.
This operation is carried out for 5 000 cycles at a rate of 5 cycles per min.
22.ZE.10 Addition
The fans noise is influenced by the fan’s electric drive, transmission components, fan blades, inlet and outlet
ducts, wallrings, shutter and guards, further peripheral components, supporting structures, material and surface
properties etc. and the generated airstream passing by.
Aero dynamical properties, the combination of influencing factors, the velocity of the generated airstream and
properties of adjacent surroundings effect the generation of turbulences and vibrations as well as the direction
and reach of the noise emissions.
Noise reduction measures depend on a balanced combination of the relevant influencing details which have to
be regarded and carefully documented when assessing noise emissions values in relation to other fans of the
same type with comparable non-acoustical technical data.
Airborne noise emissions, determined and declared in accordance with Annex ZAA.
Annex ZAA
(normative)
Emission of acoustical noise
ZAA.1 Noise reduction
Noise reduction of fans is an integral part of the design process and shall be achieved by particularly applying
measures at source to control noise, see for example EN ISO 11688-1:2009. The success of the applied noise
reduction measures is assessed on the basis of the actual noise emission values in relation to other appliances
of the same type with comparable non-acoustical technical data.
ZAA.2 Noise test code
ZAA.2.1 General
The following subclauses cover standardized methods to determine A-weighted emission sound pressure and
sound power levels and shall be used for the appliances covered by this document.
