Zhaga interface specification Book 1 and Book 14

IEC PAS 63329:2020(E) This Book 14 defines three socketable LED Light Engines (with integrated Electronic Control Gears) and three socketable LED Modules (without integrated Electronic Control Gears). These LED Modules and LLEs have a rectangular shape and are typically applied in general lighting applications. These products are intended to be installed and replaced by professionals and non-professionals. This Book 1 defines the common concepts that underlie the Zhaga interface specifications. In addition, this Book 1 specifies general requirements for Zhaga compliant components of LED Luminaires.

Overview

IEC PAS 63329:2020 - “Zhaga interface specification Book 1 and Book 14” is a publicly available IEC specification that defines common concepts, general requirements and a set of standardized interfaces for socketable rectangular LED Modules and LED Light Engines (LLEs).

  • Book 1 provides the common concepts, terminology and general requirements for Zhaga‑compliant LED luminaire components.
  • Book 14 specifies three socketable LED Light Engines (with integrated Electronic Control Gears - ECGs) and three socketable LED Modules (without ECGs). These components are intended for general lighting, are rectangular in form factor, and are designed to be installed or replaced by professionals and non‑professionals.

Key Topics

The specification is organized to enable interoperability and reliable compliance testing. Major technical topics include:

  • Mechanical interface - drawing principles, dimensioning, caps and holders, retention and keying to ensure physical interchangeability.
  • Photometric interface - definition of Light Emitting Surface (LES), luminous flux, luminous intensity distribution, luminance uniformity, correlated color temperature (CCT) and color rendering (CRI).
  • Electrical interface - nominal input current and forward voltage ranges, insulation and hot‑plugging considerations; separate requirements for LED Modules vs. LLEs (mains powered).
  • Thermal interface - thermal management boundary conditions between module/LLE and luminaire.
  • Control interface - optional dimming and control functionality and related test methods.
  • Compliance test tools and tests - mechanical gauges, PETF (photometric and electrical test fixture), and detailed compliance test procedures for modules, LLEs and luminaires including mechanical, photometric, electrical, thermal and control tests.
  • Product Data Set - standardized data requirements for product information and certification support.
  • Compatibility & interchangeability - guidance on certification, market surveillance and compatibility checks.

Applications

IEC PAS 63329 is practical for:

  • LED module and LLE manufacturers who need to design socketable, rectangular products that are interoperable across luminaire families.
  • Luminaire OEMs and designers seeking modular components for easier assembly, maintenance and aftermarket upgrades.
  • Testing labs and certification bodies that perform mechanical, photometric, electrical and thermal compliance testing.
  • Specifiers, facility managers and installers evaluating products for replaceability, safety and long‑term maintenance.
Benefits include improved interchangeability, reduced product development time, and clearer product data for procurement and maintenance.

Related Standards (if applicable)

  • Zhaga interface family and other Zhaga Books (refer to Zhaga organization).
  • IEC technical publications covering LED lighting safety, EMC and photometry (see IEC catalogue for related normative references).

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held resp

The article discusses IEC PAS 63329:2020, which consists of two books, Book 1 and Book 14, focusing on the Zhaga interface specification. Book 14 defines three socketable LED Light Engines (LLEs) and three socketable LED Modules for general lighting applications. These products have a rectangular shape and can be installed and replaced by professionals and non-professionals. On the other hand, Book 1 establishes the fundamental concepts of the Zhaga interface specifications and outlines the general requirements for Zhaga compliant components of LED Luminaires.
