Overview
IEC 62343-1:2019 establishes general conditions for the performance standards of optical dynamic modules. This international standard, developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), serves as the foundational reference for all performance standards concerning dynamic optical modules used in fiber optic systems. The standard defines minimum requirements and operating conditions that ensure consistent evaluation and verification of module performance. The second edition, released in 2019 with amendments in 2023, includes critical corrections and updates, enhancing the technical accuracy and applicability of the general conditions.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: Defines the baseline conditions for testing the standard performance of optical dynamic modules. It acts as a reference for all related performance standards.
- Operating Conditions: Specifies required environmental and operational parameters such as temperature range (−5 °C to 70 °C), relative humidity (5% to 85%), vibration frequency, shock, and maximum input power parameters to ensure reliable module function.
- Wavelength Range Requirements: Defines applicable operational spectral bands aligned with ITU-T Recommendation G.Supplement 39. These bands range from O-band (1260–1360 nm) to U-band (1625–1675 nm).
- Storage Conditions: Presents typical environmental factors for storage, such as temperature range (−40 °C to 70 °C), humidity limits, and mechanical stress limits due to shock and vibration.
- Absolute Maximum Ratings: Lists the recommended maximum electrical and optical ratings to prevent damage, including applied voltage, current, electrical power, and optical input power.
- Technical Corrections: The latest edition addresses errors in operating conditions (Table 1) and revisions to storage conditions in Annex A.1.
Applications

INTRODUCTION
Performance standards define standard electrical and optical performance under a set of
prescribed conditions and contain a series or a set of tests and measurements with clearly
defined conditions, severities and pass/fail criteria. The tests are intended to be run on initial
design verification to prove the product's ability to satisfy the requirements of a specific
application, market sector or user group.
Performance standards do not specify the requirements on reliability, which are defined in
IEC 62343-2.
