Specifications for particular types of winding wires - Part 15: Polyesterimide enamelled round aluminium wire, class 180
Specifies the requirements of enamelled round aluminium winding wire of class 180 with a sole coating based on polyesterimide resin, which may be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements. Class 180 is a thermal class that requires a minimum temperature index of 180 and a heat shock temperature of at least 200 °C. The temperature in degrees Celsius corresponding to the temperature index is not necessarily that at which it is recommended that the wire be operated and this will depend on many factors, including the type of equipment involved. The range of nominal conductor diameters covered by this standard is as follows: - grade 1: 0,400 mm up to and including 1,600 mm; - grade 2: 0,400 mm up to and including 5,000 mm. The nominal conductor diameters are specified in Clause 4 of IEC 60317-0-3. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are listed below: - new requirements for appearance, Subclause 3.2, added; - springiness test, Clause 7, determined to be inappropriate; - cut-through test, Clause 10, determined to be inappropriate; - high temperature failure test, Clause 22, deleted; - new pin hole test, Clause 23, added.

Overview
IEC 60317-15:2004 (consolidated with amendments to 2024) specifies requirements for polyesterimide enamelled round aluminium winding wire, thermal class 180. It applies to aluminium conductor wires with a sole polyesterimide-based enamel coating (modifications allowed if the chemical identity is retained) intended for electrical windings. The standard defines thermal performance (minimum temperature index 180 and heat shock ≥ 200 °C), dimensional ranges for two grades, test requirements and appearance criteria.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and materials: Enamelled round aluminium wire with a single polyesterimide resin coating; modified resins permitted if they meet the wire requirements and retain chemical identity.
- Thermal class: Minimum temperature index 180; heat shock temperature at least 200 °C. The stated temperature index is a material rating, not a direct operating-temperature recommendation.
- Nominal conductor diameters:
- Grade 1: 0.400 mm up to and including 1.600 mm
- Grade 2: 0.400 mm up to and including 5.000 mm
(Specific diameters referenced to IEC 60317-0-3.)
- Mechanical & electrical tests: References to general test methods in IEC 60317‑0‑3 and IEC 60851 where applicable. Tests covered include dimensions, electrical resistance, elongation, flexibility/adherence and heat shock.
- Resistance to abrasion: Minimum force-to-failure values are specified in Table 1 for nominal diameters up to 2.500 mm (different values for Grade 1 and Grade 2; intermediate diameters use the next larger nominal value).
- Dielectric/bonding tests: Breakdown voltage (with elevated temperature 180 °C), continuity of insulation and the new pin hole test are included.
- Tests deemed inappropriate or deleted: springiness, cut-through, resistance to refrigerants, solderability, heat/solvent bonding, dielectric dissipation factor and loss of mass are listed as inappropriate or removed for this wire type. High temperature failure test (Clause 22) was deleted.
- Appearance & packaging: New appearance requirements added; packaging requirements retained.
