Overview
IEC 62496-4-214:2020 specifies the interface dimensions and mechanical requirements for a terminated waveguide optical circuit board (OCB) assembly using a single-row thirty-two-channel symmetric PMT connector. The standard covers the geometry and mating features required to align polymer waveguide cores on an OCB with the optical fibers of an MT-type connector, including guide-pin positions, clamp spring characteristics and example component dimensions in annexes.
Keywords: IEC 62496-4-214, optical circuit boards, terminated waveguide, PMT connector, single-row thirty‑two‑channel, waveguide OCB, interface dimensions, MT connector.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and purpose: Defines standard interface dimensions for a terminated waveguide OCB assembly using a symmetric PMT connector matched to a single-row 32-channel ferrule.
- Connector form factor: The symmetric PMT connector shares the same outer dimensions as the MT connector type specified in IEC 61754‑5 and mates with MT-style ferrules; it is not intermateable with standard 16‑channel MT ferrules.
- Alignment and origin: The X-axis is defined by the line connecting two guide-pin hole centres; the origin is the midpoint between those guide holes - used as the reference for core positions and interface tolerances.
- Core positions and dimensions: Precise X/Y coordinates and tolerances for the 32 channel core locations are provided (see tables and figures in the standard).
- Guide pins and clamp spring: Interface dimensions for guide pins (e.g., pin diameter and length ranges) and clamp spring are specified. Example values:
- Guide pin diameter A: 0.547–0.549 mm, length D: 10.8–11.2 mm
- Clamp spring free length and required compression force: clamping compression force shall be 6.8 N to 12.8 N when M2 is between 15.8 mm and 16.2 mm
- Annex examples: Informative annexes provide example component dimensions for a symmetric PMT body, waveguide OCB port positions, and a single‑row 32‑channel MT ferrule.
Applications
- Standardizes mechanical mating for high‑density planar waveguide interconnects in:
- Optical backplanes and board-to-board links
- Data-center and telecom optical modules
- High-density polymer waveguide assemblies and flexible OCBs
- Useful where precise optical alignment, repeatable mating and mechanical compatibility with MT-style ferrules are required.
Who should use this standard
- Connector and OCB designers, optical interconnect manufacturers, test laboratories, system integrators and procurement/specification engineers developing or verifying high‑density polymer waveguide assemblies.

4 Description
The assembly is an assembly comprised of a symmetric PMT connector and a thirty-two-
channel waveguide OCB. The symmetric PMT connector is a rectangular connector having the
same outer dimensions as the type MT connector specified in IEC 61754-5. The symmetric PMT
connector is aligned using alignment pins and is normally secured by the use of a latching
spring and mates with the type MT connector as shown in Figure 1. Dimensions of components
for the assembly are shown in Annex A. The waveguide OCB comprises a planar light-guide
consisting of a core and cladding material appropriate to transmit light as the operational
wavelengths require, the light-guide being supported on a substrate. Preferably, the substrate
will be flexible in order to accommodate compliance to the MT connector. The cores of the
waveguide OCB are aligned with the optical fibres of the MT connector after mating using two
guide pins and a clamp spring. Dimensions of a single-row thirty-two-channel MT ferrule are
shown in Annex B. This symmetric PMT connector is not intermateable with the standard 16
channel MT ferrules.

Dimensions of an example of components for the assembly
A.1 Symmetric PMT connector
The example of a symmetric PMT connector is composed of a PMT body, a PMT cover and a
PMT boot, as shown in Figure A.1. The waveguide OCB is embedded and terminated between
the PMT body and the PMT cover.
