Tool shanks with 7/24 taper for automatic tool changers - Part 2: Dimensions and designation of shanks of forms J, JD and JF

ISO 7388-2:2007 specifies the dimensions of tool shanks with a 7/24 taper of shank form J (with two possible additions for each) for automatic tool changers, used on machines having an automatic gripping system for feeding tools from the magazine to the spindle and vice-versa. These tools are designed with the most important dimensions for use in spindle noses according to ISO 9270.

Overview

ISO 7388-2:2007 defines the dimensions and designation of tool shanks with a 7/24 taper for automatic tool changers - specifically shank forms J, JD and JF. It standardizes key geometrical features, tolerancing principles (millimetre units), optional coolant and data-medium provisions, and the recommended designation format for compatibility with magazine-to-spindle automatic gripping systems and spindle noses per ISO 9270.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Shank forms and options
    • Form J: basic shank geometry and critical dimensions (see tables for shank numbers/sizes).
    • Form JD: adds a central through-hole (e.g., for internal coolant) subject to core diameter constraints relative to the retention knob thread.
    • Form JF: adds two rear flange holes for inner coolant supply; auxiliary connecting bore must be sealed for operation up to 5 MPa.
  • Dimensions and tolerances
    • All dimensions in millimetres; tolerancing follows ISO 8015 and general tolerances per ISO 2768‑1 and ISO 2768‑2 when not individually specified.
    • Detailed tables specify diameters, lengths, radii and angle (7/24 taper alpha) for shank numbers (30, 40, 45, 50, 60).
  • Data medium provision
    • Optional recesses for a data medium (tool ID / chip) are defined with fitting position and dimensions.
  • Material and heat treatment
    • Guidance to select heat treatment, hardness and case depth to meet strength, toughness and wear requirements (no prescriptive metallurgy).
  • Designation
    • Clear naming convention: “Tool shank ISO 7388-2 - [Form] [Size] - [D if data medium]” (e.g., Tool shank ISO 7388-2 - J 40 - D).

Applications and users

  • Who uses it
    • CNC machine tool manufacturers, toolholder and shank manufacturers, tooling suppliers, design/production engineers, quality and metrology teams.
  • Practical use cases
    • Ensuring interchangeability of tool shanks in automatic tool changers and spindle noses.
    • Specifying shanks compatible with internal coolant systems (JF/JD) and tool identification/data media.
    • Designing retention knob interfaces and ensuring mechanical and pressure-sealing performance for coolant-fed tooling.

Related standards

  • ISO 9270 - 7/24 tapers for spindle noses (compatibility with spindle interfaces)
  • ISO 2768‑1 / ISO 2768‑2 - general linear and geometrical tolerances
  • ISO 8015 - fundamental tolerancing principle
  • ISO 7388 series Part 1 & Part 3 - other shank forms and retention knobs

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 7388-2 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 29, Small tools.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 7388-2:1984), which has been technically
revised.
ISO 7388 consists of the following parts, under the general title Tool shanks with 7/24 taper for automatic tool
changers:
⎯ Part 1: Dimensions and designation of shanks of forms A, AD, AF, U, UD and UF
⎯ Part 2: Dimensions and designation of shanks of forms J, JD and JF
⎯ Part 3: Retention knobs for shanks of forms AC, AD, AF, UC, UD, UF, JD and JF
Introduction
The aim of ISO 7388 is to integrate existing standards which are most commonly used as an industrial
standard. In addition, the different developments for cooling and data chip have been taken into account.

Avant-propos
votants.
