3, Aids for ostomy and incontinence, in collaboration with the European Committee for Standardization

(CEN) Technical Committee CEN/TC 293, Assistive products and accessibility, in accordance with the

Agreement on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).

This first edition of ISO 22748 cancels and replaces ISO 9949-1:1993, ISO 9949-2:1993 and

ISO 9949-3:1993, which have been technically revised.

Introduction

Incontinence is defined as the complaint of any involuntary leakage of urine and/or faeces. It is

estimated that 400 million people are affected by incontinence worldwide and the number is increasing

as the population in many countries ages. Incontinence that cannot be (fully) cured is most commonly

managed using absorbent products.

Products come in a range of different designs but the terms that are currently used to describe the

product types vary considerably among - and even within – countries, resulting in a confusing variety

of synonyms among clinicians and academics and in the literature provided by product suppliers. A

standardized terminology would facilitate understanding and communication among stakeholders.

For many product types, several synonyms are in established use - in different countries and markets

- so that the widespread adoption of just one is unlikely to be achieved quickly.

Introduction

L’incontinence est définie comme toute plainte de fuite involontaire d’urine et/ou de matières fécales. On

estime que 400 millions de personnes souffrent d’incontinence dans le monde et ce nombre augmente

avec le vieillissement de la population dans de nombreux pays. Lorsque l’incontinence ne peut pas être

(complètement) guérie, on a le plus souvent recours à des produits absorbants.

Il existe de nombreux modèles de produits différents et les termes actuellement employés pour décrire

les types de produits varient considérablement d'un pays à l'autre, voire à l’intérieur d’un même pays.

Dans ce contexte, les cliniciens et les universitaires, de même que la littérature proposée par les

fournisseurs de produits, utilisent toute une variété de synonymes, ce qui peut prêter à confusion. Une

terminologie normalisée faciliterait donc la compréhension et la communication entre les diverses

parties prenantes.

Compte tenu de l’usage établi de plusieurs synonymes pour de nombreux types de produits tant dans

différents pays que sur différents marchés, il semble peu probable de réussir à faire adopter rapidement

un terme unique pour chaque type de produit. En conséquence, si le présent document fournit un terme

recommandé pour chaque type de produit, il reconnaît également la complexité de la situation actuelle

en indiquant les synonymes pertinents identifiés. Il s'efforce par ailleurs de faciliter la compréhension

entre les différentes parties prenantes en associant les différents synonymes présentés à des images de

chaque type de produit.

Le présent document utilise une hiérarchie de descripteurs pour différencier, décrire et nommer les

diverses (sous-)catégories de types de produits. Le cas échéant, les descripteurs sont toujours présentés

dans le même ordre: Type de produit (par exemple, complet); Groupe d'utilisateurs (par exemple, pour

enfants); Pour contenir (urine seulement, matières fécales seulement ou les deux); Caractéristiques

et objectif (par exemple, avec système d’attache)
