Overview
ISO 15835-1:2018 specifies performance and manufacturing requirements for reinforcement couplers used to make mechanical splices of steel reinforcing bars in reinforced concrete. The standard focuses on couplers produced in continuous manufacturing and is intended to be used with adequate bar processing and quality control. It covers couplers for structures under predominantly static loads, and provides additional requirements when couplers are used in high‑cycle fatigue or low‑cycle (seismic) reverse loading applications. Note: compression‑only couplers (e.g., end‑bearing sleeves) are not covered.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Scope of verification: Properties of a coupler are verified via testing of the complete mechanical splice (clause 5).
- Categories of splices:
- B (Basic) – strength, ductility, slip under static loads
- F (Fatigue) – adds high‑cycle fatigue requirements
- S (Seismic) – adds low‑cycle elastic‑plastic reverse loading requirements
(If tested for both F and S, classification FS is permitted.)
- Strength and ductility: Mechanical splice tensile strength must meet the requirements referenced to the reinforcing bar product standard; ductility of the spliced bar outside the splice shall be at least 0.7 × Agt (specified characteristic elongation). If Agt is not specified, a minimum of 3% elongation is required (clause 5.3).
- Slip under static forces: Slip is measured by one of two defined test options; the median slip of tests shall not exceed 0.10 mm, with outliers no more than 0.05 mm above the maximum. Longer couplers (>100 mm) have special considerations (clause 5.4).
- Fatigue and seismic performance: Optional, but specified test programmes and acceptance criteria exist for high‑cycle fatigue and low‑cycle reverse loading (clauses 5.5–5.6).
- Traceability & installation: Requirements for marking, batch/lot traceability and manufacturer installation instructions are specified (clause 5.7–5.8).
- Testing references: Mechanical splice tests follow ISO 15835-2; reinforcing bar tests reference ISO 15630-1.
Applications
- Ensures reliable mechanical splices in reinforced concrete structures: buildings, bridges, precast elements, and infrastructure where continuity of reinforcement is required.
- Controls crack widths and structural continuity by limiting slip and ensuring ductile failure modes.
- Applicable for designers, specifiers and fabricators selecting couplers for static, fatigue‑sensitive, or seismic applications.

ISO 15835-1:2018 provides a comprehensive framework for the specifications of couplers used in the mechanical splicing of steel reinforcing bars. The scope of this standard is particularly relevant as it sets forth the requirements necessary to ensure the reliability and integrity of couplers in reinforced concrete structures, predominantly under static loads. It recognizes the multifaceted nature of construction, allowing for the possibility of more stringent customer-specific requirements, thus showcasing its adaptability to varying project needs. One of the significant strengths of ISO 15835-1:2018 is its focus on continuous production of coupler components, ensuring uniformity and quality control throughout the manufacturing process. This emphasis on production quality aligns well with industry demands for high-performance materials. Additionally, the document delineates the different performance requirements needed for couplers subjected to diverse loading conditions, including high-cycle elastic fatigue and low-cycle elastic-plastic reverse loading, which enhances its applicability in complex structural design scenarios. The detailed specifications for the mechanical splicing system not only facilitate compliance with safety standards but also serve as a guide for manufacturers to develop products that meet these essential requirements. Furthermore, by excluding compression-only couplers like end-bearing sleeves, ISO 15835-1:2018 hones in on the specific needs of mechanical splicing applications, promoting clarity and focus in its guidelines. Overall, the ISO 15835-1:2018 standard stands out as a vital resource for engineers and construction professionals by ensuring that coupler systems for mechanical splices maintain structural integrity, thus directly supporting the safety and durability of reinforced concrete structures. Its comprehensive nature and flexibility to incorporate varying customer specifications further underscore its relevance in modern construction practices.
