BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 408, Safety Colours, was drawn up by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 80, Safety Colors, the Secretaiiat of which is held by the Stichting Nederlands Norma-
lisatie-instituut ("1).
Work on this question by the Technical Committee began in 1952 and led, in 1961, to the
adoption nf a Draft IS0 Recommerid-ttion.
In June 1962, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 507) was circulated to all the IS0
Member Bodies for enquiry. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial
nature, by the following Member Bodies :

SAFETY COLOURS
1. PURPOSE
This IS0 Recommendation defines the meaning and application of a limited number of safety
colours and geometrical forms which should be used for the purpose of preventing accidents
and meeting certain emergencies.
2. SCOPE
Safety colours should attract attention so as to afford a rapid indication of dangers, and to
facilitate their identification. They may also be used to indicate the location of devices and
equipment of special importance from the point of view of safety.
Safety colours do not by themselves eliminate any danger, and coloured safety instructions
cannot be substituted for proper accident prevention measures.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 408, Couleurs de sécurité, a été élaborée par le Comité Tech-
nique ISO/TC 80, Couleurs de sécurité, dont le Secrétariat est assuré par le Stichting Nederlands
Normalisatie-instituut (”1).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question furent entrepris par le Comité Technique en 1952
et aboutirent en 1961 à l’adoption d’un Projet de Recommandation ISO.
En juin 1962, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (No 507) fut soumis à l’enquête de tous
les Comités Membres de 1’ISO. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve de quelques modifications d’ordre
rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

COULEURS DE SÉCURITÉ
1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 dkfinit la signification et l’emploi d’un nombre restreint de
couleurs et de formes géométriques qu’il y a lieu d’utiliser afin d’éviter les accidents et de faire
face à certaines situations d’urgence.
2. DOMAINE D’APPLICATION
Les couleurs de sécurité doivent attirer l’attention en vue de signaler rapidement un danger et
d’en faciliter l’identification. Elles peuvent également être utilisées pour indiquer l’emplacement
de dispositifs et d’équipement ayant une importance particulière du point de vue de la sécurité.
Les couleurs de sécurité n’éliminent pas le danger par elles-mêmes; les instructions qu’elles
donnent ne peuvent se substituer aux mesures adéquates de prévention des accidents.
