Overview
ISO 13486-1:1999 defines essential dimensional and physical characteristics for components used in hydraulic braking systems for road vehicles. Specifically, it covers double-flare pipes, tapped holes, male fittings (Types A and B) and tube seats. The standard targets metallic brake tubing (with or without surface protection) and includes requirements for material properties, corrosion resistance and marking/identification.
Key Topics
- Scope and components: Requirements for double-flare pipes, male fittings (Type A and Type B), tapped holes (AS and BS), and tube seats used in hydraulic braking systems.
- Dimensional specifications: Detailed dimensions and tolerances are provided for common nominal pipe diameters (for example 4.75, 6, 6.35, 8 and 10 mm) and corresponding fittings and seats.
- Material properties: Steel material requirements are included (typical values shown: tensile strength ≈ 290 MPa, yield ≈ 200 MPa, elongation ≈ 25% for bendable pipes).
- Surface condition and corrosion resistance: Inner and outer surfaces must be free from oxidation. Outer surfaces must resist corrosion and pass the ISO 9227 salt spray test for at least 96 hours.
- Fitting and hole types: Definitions and dimensional drawings for Type A and B male fittings and their matching tapped holes (AS, BS), including allowances for surface protection thickness and manufacturing options (forged vs. turned).
- Tube seats: Geometry and surface finish requirements to ensure reliable sealing and mechanical fit for brake line connections.
- Marking and identification: Marking rules for forged and turned fittings (three-dent marking for forgings, step marking for turned parts) and a recommended identification statement for documentation and marketing materials.
Applications
- Automotive OEMs and Tier suppliers designing or manufacturing brake tubing, fittings, and seats to ensure interchangeability and safety.
- Component manufacturers producing double-flare pipes, male fittings and associated tapped holes.
- Quality assurance and testing labs verifying dimensional conformity, material properties and corrosion resistance per ISO 13486-1.
- Aftermarket and repair suppliers specifying replacement brake lines and fittings that meet original-equipment standards.
- Design engineers ensuring brake system interfaces meet standardized sealing and mechanical fit criteria.
Related Standards
- ISO 4038:1996 - simple flare pipes, tapped holes and fittings (related pipe requirements)
- ISO 9227:1990 - salt spray corrosion testing
- ISO 1302, ISO 3996, ISO 6120 - referenced for surface texture and brake hose assembly considerations
- ISO 13486-2 - Part 2: Flare-to-flare connections
Using ISO 13486-1:1999 helps ensure compatibility, safety and corrosion-resistant performance of hydraulic braking pipework and fittings across road-vehicle platforms.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
International Standard ISO 13486-1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 22, Road vehicles,
Subcommittee SC 2, Braking systems and equipment.
ISO 13486 consists of the following parts, under the general title Road vehicles — Hydraulic braking systems:
Part 1: Double-flare pipes, tapped holes, male fittings and tube seats
Part 2: Flare-to-flare connections
