Overview
ISO 9374-5:2021 - "Cranes - Information to be provided - Part 5: Overhead travelling cranes and portal bridge cranes" specifies the information that purchasers and manufacturers must exchange when enquiring about, ordering, tendering for, or supplying overhead travelling cranes and portal/portal-bridge cranes. The standard ensures clear, consistent technical data for selection, installation, testing and safe operation of these cranes.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope of information: Defines the details purchasers should supply with enquiries/orders (see Annex A format), and the technical information manufacturers must provide when tendering or delivering equipment.
- Manufacturer deliverables:
- Technical information and test certificates to support installation, testing and use (referenced to ISO 7363).
- Instruction manual covering routine servicing, inspection and maintenance.
- Erection/installation information on request.
- Drawings & dimensions:
- General arrangement drawings with dimensions demonstrating compliance with purchaser requirements and the clearance/restriction limits shown in Figures 1–6.
- Detailed keys in the figures identify critical dimensions (span, outreach, hook lifting/lowering heights, rail positions, clearances).
- Load effects on runway:
- Loads applied to runways should be calculated in accordance with ISO 8686-5 or by agreement between purchaser and manufacturer.
- Enquiry/order format:
- Annex A provides a purchaser’s enquiry form including rated capacities, lifting ranges, speeds, site data (wharf elevation, mean water level), and bulk handling throughput coordinates where applicable.
Applications and users
Who uses ISO 9374-5:2021:
- Crane purchasers (terminals, factories, shipyards) preparing enquiries or orders.
- Crane manufacturers and suppliers preparing technical offers and delivery documentation.
- Engineering consultants and structural designers ensuring runway and building interfaces meet crane loads and clearances.
- Installation and maintenance teams relying on manufacturer-supplied manuals and test certificates.
Practical applications:
- Specifying overhead travelling cranes and portal/gantry cranes for industrial plants, ports and bulk-handling terminals.
- Ensuring accurate tendering, avoiding scope gaps, and verifying that crane geometry and capacities match site constraints.
- Coordinating crane interface dimensions with civil and structural design.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/ directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www .iso .org/ patents).

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 96, Cranes, Subcommittee SC 9, Bridge
and gantry cranes.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 9374-5:1991), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
— new Clause 3 Terms and definitions has been added;
— Figures 1 to 6 have been redrawn;
— Annex A has been rearranged.

The main differences between the various ship-to-shore cranes are as follows.
a) Figure 4: the dual (single) hoist ship-to-shore container crane should be capable of handling
containers for loading onto or discharging from a container vessel. Two 40-ft (45-ft) or four 20-ft
containers can be lifted together by the dual hoist crane. One 40-ft (45-ft) or two 20-ft containers
can be lifted by the single hoist crane. On Figure 4 the dual hoist crane is drawn. There is no key 3
for the single hoist crane.
b) Figure 5: the double trolley ship-to-shore container crane should be capable of handling containers
for loading onto or discharging from a container vessel. There are main trolley operating on the
upper girder and auxiliary trolley operating on the portal beam.
c) Figure 6: the bridge type grab ship unloader should be capable of handling bulk material for
discharging from a bulk cargo vessel.
