Overview

ISO 7613:2025 - Ships and marine technology - Hopper dredger - Suction tube position monitor (STPM) standardizes the design, components, interfaces, technical requirements and test methods for suction tube position monitors installed on hopper dredgers. It covers the installed system elements, functional and performance requirements, enclosure and power-supply criteria, and verification/test procedures (function, performance and enclosure tests).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • System scope and integration

    • Applicable to installed STPM components and systems; can operate stand‑alone or be integrated into a Hopper Dredger Supervisory and Control System (HD‑SCS) and SCADA.
    • Includes a tidal-data interface and adherence to human‑machine interface (HMI) graphics per ISO 20662.
  • Core components

    • Suction tube posture measurement sensors
    • Suction tube inlet draught and inlet sensors
    • Gantry and winch posture/position sensors
    • Swell compensator stroke and pressure sensors

  • Functional requirements

    • Tide input (tide table, manual input, or tide gauge)
    • Parameter presets (tube length, draghead/gimbal sizes, sensor parameters)
    • Operation controls: hoisting/lowering, gantry/winch control, visor angle, swell compensator regulation
    • Visualization: continuous SCADA display of 2D/3D views, target/current depths, distances, visor angle, winch speed, system statuses and limits
    • Alarms and recording: defined alarm conditions for unsafe depths, distances and angles; alarm display and recording on SCADA
    • Calibration and diagnostics: vertical/horizontal calibration routines, manual depth calibration and diagnostic outputs for gantries, winches, swell compensator and active draghead
  • Performance

    • Accuracy: maximum permissible error ±0.15 m for draghead depths from 0–30 m; a depth‑dependent error is specified for depths >30 m (see ISO 7613 for exact formula).
    • Planar position error: ±0.25 m in ship coordinates.
    • Data recording: interval ≤2 s, storage for at least 24 h continuous recording, data replay available.
  • Enclosure & power

    • Enclosure IP requirements per IEC 60529: IP68 for submersible items, IP56 for deck outdoor equipment, IP20 for console devices.
    • Power: main and standby feeds; servers/workstations/switches on UPS with fail‑safe operation and at least 30 minutes autonomy.
  • Verification

    • Functional and performance test methods provided (Annex A and B, informative) plus enclosure tests per IEC 60529 methods.

Applications - who uses this standard

  • Dredging vessel designers and shipyards specifying STPM systems

bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,

iv
Introduction
There are many system integrators for the suction tube position monitor, with significant product
differences, varying quality, and no applicable standards. These factors seriously affect the quality of
dredging and are problematic for ship construction management and system upgrades, having even given
rise to safety hazards in operation.
The aim of this document is to standardize the components, interface, functions, performance and testing
methods of the system, thereby reducing communication costs at various stages and improving the quality
and efficiency of dredging.
