1 Scope
This document specifies the test method for climate resistance of optical glass and the classification of
the optical glass according to the test results.

3 Terms and definitions

percentage of transmitted light, passing through a specimen, which deviates from the incident light by
no more than 0,044 rad (2,5°) by forward scattering

4 Principle
To evaluate the climate resistance of optical glass in its operating environment, the hazes of polished
glass surfaces before and after testing are measured with the haze meter specified in ISO 14782, and
the climate resistance is determined by the change in the amount of haze.
5 Test apparatus
5.1 Configuration
The test apparatus consists of the components shown in Figure 1. The size and arrangement of the
components in the glass water tank are shown in Figure 2.

5.2 Thermostatic chamber
The chamber shall have an automatic temperature adjustment capability.
The ceiling of chamber shall have a through-hole for the stirring rod which is rotated by the stirring
motor as shown in Figure 1.
5.3 Glass water tank and lid
The water tank and the lid shall be made of either borosilicate glass 3.3 in accordance with ISO 3585
or quartz glass, the thickness of which shall be between 5 mm and 20 mm. They shall be placed in the
thermostatic chamber as shown in Figure 1.
Eliminate the gap of the contacting part between the lid and the rim of the tank by lapping. A hole shall
be provided at the centre of the lid so that the stirring rod passes through it.
5.4 Water
The purity of the water used shall be in accordance with the grade 2 of ISO 3696. The amount of water
contained by the water tank shall be 1,8 l.

5.5 Stirring unit
The stirring unit consists of a stirring motor, a stirring rod and a stirring fan as shown in Figure 1. The
stirring rod shall be straight, not bent or warped. The dimension of the stirring fan is shown in Figure 2.
NOTE If the stirring rod is bent or warped, the stirring rod will be decentered during rotation and the
stirring fan will be shifted from the correct position.
5.6 Seal
An elastic seal, such as an O-ring, shall be provided at the gap between the stirring rod and the lid to
keep humidity in the tank constant during the test. Confirm the condition of the elastic seal before the
test and exchange the seal if it deteriorates.
5.7 Specimen holder
Figure 3 shows an example configuration of a hexadecagonal specimen holder at the position of 100 mm
under the stirring fan above the water level, which keeps the specimen’s surface vertical. This holder
shall be fabricated in a shape that allows up to eight specimens to be placed at equal intervals from the
central axis of the stirring rod as shown in Figure 1.
The specimen holder shall be placed in the centre of the water tank, as shown in Figure 2.

5.8 Specimen holder stand
The specimen holder stand shall hold the specimens 100 mm from the inner bottom of the water tank.
5.9 Water tank stand
Place a stand under the water tank to ensure a pathway of airflow.

6 Specimens
6.1 Shape and size of specimens
The shape of the specimen shall be a square-formed plate, and its size shall be 30 mm × 30 mm × 3 mm.
6.2 Number of specimens
The number of specimens per test shall be 5 to 8.
6.3 Surface treatment of specimens before test
Both sides of surfaces of each specimen shall be polished with cerium oxide slurry, then contamination
shall be removed from the polished surfaces with an organic solvent. After that, the polished specimens
are cleaned with detergent, distilled water and alcohols such as IPA (isopropyl alcohol). The detailed
cleaning method shall be described in Annex B. The cleaning shall be started within 24 h after
the polished surface has been exposed to the atmosphere, and after that, the test shall be started
immediately.
If the cleaning procedure of the specimens is started more than 24 h after polishing, the protective

Le présent document spécifie la méthode d'essai pour la résistance climatique du verre optique et la
classification du verre optique en fonction des résultats d’essai.

4 Principe
Pour évaluer la résistance climatique du verre optique dans son environnement d’utilisation, les voiles
de surfaces de verre poli sont mesurés avec l'indicateur de voile spécifié dans l’ISO 14782 avant et après
essai, et la résistance climatique est déterminée à partir de la variation de la quantité de voile.
5 Appareillage d'essai
5.1 Configuration
L’appareillage d’essai comprend les composants représentés à la Figure 1. Les dimensions et la
disposition des composants dans le réservoir d’eau en verre sont indiquées à la Figure 2.

5.2 Enceinte thermostatique
L’enceinte doit posséder une fonction de réglage automatique de la température.
Le plafond de l’enceinte doit comporter un trou traversant pour la tige d'agitation qui est mis en rotation
par le moteur agitateur, comme indiqué à la Figure 1
5.3 Réservoir d’eau en verre et couvercle
Le réservoir d’eau et le couvercle doivent être fabriqués soit en verre borosilicaté 3.3 conformément à
l’ISO 3585, soit en verre de quartz, dont l’épaisseur doit être comprise entre 5 mm et 20 mm. Ils doivent
être placés dans l’enceinte thermostatique représentée à la Figure 1.
Supprimer le jeu existant entre le couvercle et le bord du réservoir par rodage. Un orifice doit être
prévu au centre du couvercle pour faire passer la tige d’agitation.
5.4 Eau
La pureté de l’eau utilisée doit respecter les exigences de classe 2 de l’ISO 3696. Verser 1,8 l d’eau
distillée dans le réservoir d’eau. La quantité d'eau contenue dans le réservoir d'eau est de 1,8 l.

5.5 Groupe agitateur
Le groupe agitateur se compose d'un moteur agitateur, d'une tige d’agitation et d'un ventilateur de
brassage, tels qu’indiqués à la Figure 1. La tige d’agitation doit être droite, ne pas être pliée ou emballée.
Les dimensions du ventilateur de brassage sont indiquées à la Figure 2.
NOTE Si la tige d’agitation est tordue ou déformée, elle se décentre pendant la rotation et le ventilateur de
brassage se déplace par rapport à la position voulue.
5.6 Joint d’étanchéité
Un joint élastique, par exemple un joint torique, doit être prévu au niveau de l’espace existant entre la
tige d’agitation et le couvercle pour maintenir constante l’humidité dans le réservoir pendant l’essai.
Vérifier l’état du joint élastique avant l’essai et remplacer le joint s'il se détériore.
5.7 Porte-éprouvette
La Figure 3 montre un exemple de configuration d'un porte-éprouvette hexadécagonal placé 100 mm
sous le ventilateur de brassage au-dessus du niveau de l’eau, qui maintient la surface de l’éprouvette
verticale. Ce porte-éprouvette doit présenter une forme permettant à huit éprouvettes d’être placées à
intervalles réguliers à partir de l’axe central de la tige d’agitation, tel que représenté à la Figure 1.
Le porte-éprouvette doit être placé au centre du réservoir d’eau, tel que représenté à la Figure 2.

5.8 Support du porte-éprouvette
Le support du porte-éprouvette doit maintenir les éprouvettes à 100 mm du fond intérieur du
réservoir d’eau.
5.9 Support du réservoir d'eau
Placer un support sous le réservoir d’eau afin d’assurer une bonne circulation de l’air.

6 Éprouvettes
6.1 Forme et dimensions des éprouvettes
La forme de l’éprouvette doit être celle d'une plaque carrée, et ses dimensions doivent être de
30 mm × 30 mm × 3 mm.
6.2 Nombre d'éprouvettes
Le nombre d'éprouvettes par essai doit être compris entre 5 et 8.
6.3 Traitement de surface des éprouvettes avant essai
Les deux côtés des surfaces de chaque éprouvette doivent être polis avec une suspension d’oxyde
de cérium, et les contaminants retirés des surfaces polies avec un solvant organique. Après quoi, les
éprouvettes polies sont nettoyées avec un détergent, de l’eau distillée et des alcools tels que l’IPA
(alcool isopropylique). La méthode de nettoyage détaillée est décrite à l’Annexe B. Le nettoyage doit
commencer sous 24 h après que la surface polie a été exposée à l’atmosphère, et l’essai, être réalisé
immédiatement après.
Si la procédure de nettoyage des éprouvettes doit débuter plus de 24 h après le polissage, les matériaux
de protection, à savoir les films ou résines employés dans le procédé de polissage des lentilles en verre,
doivent être appliqués sur les surfaces polies immédiatement après le polissage, afin d’éviter toute
exposition de la surface du verre à l’atmosphère. Dissoudre le film protecteur avec un solvant organique
ou le retirer avant le nettoyage des éprouvettes.
