Instant coffee - Sampling method for bulk units with liners
This International Standard specifies a method of sampling a consignment of instant coffee, shipped in ten units or more, for the purpose of examination to determine whether the consignment complies with a contract specification. The cases used have inner linings of moisture-resistant material, hermetically sealed because of the hygroscopic nature of instant coffee, and are in units greater than 10 kg net mass, typically up to 50 kg. This method is also applicable to units of more than 50 kg, usually named as big bags or supersacks. The cases are generally made of cardboard of appropriate strength and the big bags are made of suitable plastic material. The method may also be used for the selection and preparation of a sufficiently representative sample of the consignment, intended to serve as a basis for an offer for sale, for examination to verify that the instant coffee to be offered for sale satisfies the producer's sales specification, for examination to determine one or more of the characteristics of the instant coffee for technical, commercial, administrative and arbitration purposes, and for retention as a reference sample for use, if required, in litigation. This International Standard is applicable to spray dried powder and freeze dried instant coffees only, due to the intrinsic fragility of particles of agglomerated instant coffee, which leads to greater breakdown and headspace in the final packed units for the consumer.

Overview
ISO 6670:2002 is an international standard that defines the sampling method for bulk units of instant coffee with liners. It specifically addresses consignments shipped in units of ten or more, with packaging designed to protect the coffee from moisture and contamination. The standard applies mainly to spray-dried and freeze-dried instant coffee packaged typically in 10 to 50 kg net mass units, including larger bulk formats like big bags or supersacks.
The purpose of ISO 6670:2002 is to provide a reliable, repeatable procedure for sampling instant coffee consignments to:
- Verify compliance with contract specifications
- Support the evaluation of coffee for sale and quality control
- Facilitate technical, commercial, administrative, and arbitration examinations
- Provide reference samples for potential legal disputes
This standard ensures the integrity of instant coffee samples by considering the hygroscopic and fragile nature of the product.

NORME INTERNATIONALE ISO 6670:2002(F)
a) à servir de base pour une offre de vente;
b) à vérifier que le café soluble offert à la vente répond aux spécifications de vente du producteur;
administratifs et d'arbitrage;

ISO 6670:2002 is a critical International Standard that outlines a comprehensive method for sampling instant coffee in bulk units with liners, ensuring the integrity of the product throughout the sampling process. The scope of this standard is well-defined, focusing specifically on consignments of instant coffee that are shipped in quantities of ten or more units, typically weighing between 10 kg to 50 kg. This clarity in scope facilitates its application in various packaging scenarios, including large bags or supersacks exceeding 50 kg. One of the notable strengths of ISO 6670:2002 is its consideration of the hygroscopic nature of instant coffee. The standard addresses the need for hermetically sealed containers lined with moisture-resistant materials, which is crucial for preserving the quality of the product during transport and storage.
