ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national Standards institutes (ISO member bodies). The work of developing International
Standards is carried out through ISO technical committees. Every member body interested
in a subject for which a technical committee has been set up has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the
member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by the
ISO Council.
Prior to 1972, the results of the work of the technical committees were published as ISO
recommendations; these documents are now in the process of being transformed into Inter-
national Standards. As part of this process, Technical Committee ISO/TC 81 has reviewed
ISO Recommendations R 765 and 1105 and found them technically suitable for trans-
formation. This International Standard, which results from the merging into one Single
document of ISO Recommendations R 765 - 1968 and 1105 - 1969, therefore replaces them,
and Amendment 1 to ISO/R 1105. It is technically identical with these documents.
ISO Recommendation R 765 was approved by the member bodies of the following countries:
Australia Finland Sweden
Switzerland
Belgium France
Brazil Germany Turkey
India
Canada United Kingdom
Chile Israel U.S.S.R.
Columbia Mexico Y ugoslavia
Czechoslovakia Netherlands
Denmark Portugal
The member body of the following country expressed disapproval of the recommendation
on technical grounds :
South Africa, Rep. of *
* Subsequently, this member body approved the recommendation.
ISO Recommendation R 1105 was approved by the member bodies of the following countries :
Australia Germany South Africa, Rep. of
Austria
Greece Sweden
Belgium India Switzerland
Brazil Iran
Thailand
Canada Ireland United Ringdom
Chile
Israel U.S.A.
Czechoslovakia Italy U.S.S.R.
Denmark Korea, Rep. of Y ugoslavia
France Portugal
No member body expressed disapproval of the recommendation.
No member body disapproved the transformation of ISO/R 765 and 1105 into International
Standards.

AVANT-PROPOS
