Overview
EN 12016:2013 - published by CEN - is the European product-family standard for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) immunity of lifts, escalators and moving walks. It specifies immunity performance criteria and test levels for apparatus and assemblies permanently installed in buildings, addressing the basic safety requirements related to their electromagnetic environment. The standard targets immunity (not emissions) and is intended to support conformity with the EMC, Lifts and Machinery Directives.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and coverage
- Applies to apparatus and assemblies used in residential, office and light‑industrial building environments; excludes severe EM environments (e.g., radio-transmitter stations, railways/metros, heavy industry, power stations).
- Covers both safety circuits (safety-critical electronics) and general function circuits, with stricter criteria for safety circuits.
- Not applicable to equipment manufactured before the publication date or to unrelated apparatus already shown compliant with the EMC Directive (e.g., lighting, general communications).
- Immunity tests referenced
- Uses EN/IEC 61000‑4 series test methods: ESD (4‑2), radiated RF (4‑3), EFT/burst (4‑4), surge (4‑5), conducted RF (4‑6), voltage dips/interruptions (4‑11), etc.
- Requires representative cable lengths (e.g., travelling cables ≥5 m) and maximization of test susceptibility by varying sample position.
- Performance criteria and evaluation
- Defines performance criteria for acceptable behaviour under disturbance (different levels for safety vs general circuits).
- Requires documentation for installers about EMC-related installation and mitigation measures.
- Extensions
- RF immunity requirements have been extended to cover mobile and wireless services (see standard for specific frequency limits and test levels).
